Donald J. Wirth, 90, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Born on September 20, 1935, in Newark, NJ, he was the only child of the late John and Gertrude Reinhard Wirth.
Following his graduation from Clifton High School, Don attended Rutgers University. He had an extensive and successful sales career with Hardman Chemical Company prior to his retirement in 2000.
Don was the dedicated and loving husband of Jean Wirth. They married in Clifton, NJ, in February of 1957 where they raised their four children. In 2002, he and Jean moved to North Myrtle Beach and shared 18 years of memories until her passing in 2020.
Joshua was Don’s faithful and devoted four-legged best friend who loved going to the dog park. While at the dog park, he met some of his most cherished friends including Dan Arthur and his wife Margo. This friendship blossomed into a “chosen” family and along with his family, Dan and Margo assisted him through the latter years of his life.
Some of the greatest conversations held by Don were those of his family, Joshua, and his Chevy Silverado. Driving Joshua to the dog park in the big black Chevy brought him great joy and a smile to his face!
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Gilliland; son, Mark Wirth; grandchildren, Kellen Brescia (Pearl), Nicole Breeden (Adam), Carly Ann Brescia; Catherine Asberger; niece, Debbie; and nephew, Ronnie. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Carl Wirth and daughter, Ann Asberger.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at The Blessed Basil Hopko Byzantine Catholic Church. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, September 3, 2026, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory, 11840 Highway 90, Little River, SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to the Humane Society.
The family extends a sincere thank you to the Dog Park family; Dan and Margo Arthur, and all the first responders who assisted him throughout the years.
