Edana Lee Armstrong Schmidt passed away on April 11, 2019 in the loving care of her family.
She was born in Baltimore, MD on April 21, 1932, the only child of Edward and Edana Armstrong. She attended college at the University of Richmond. Edana served on AT&T’s committee for special needs in the 1970s where she advocated at the congressional level for increased rights and support for the hearing-impaired.
In the late 1980s, Edana moved to Delray Beach, FL where she lived for 20 years before moving to Southport, NC. Southport was her home for the last 10 years. Edana’s commitment to the community was steadfast having volunteered for Friends of the Library, Southport Historical Society, the local thrift store, and Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) where she served as President of her local chapter for two years. She was also an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Edana is best remembered for her intelligence, independence, wit, and poise. She loved to read and never shied away from the challenge of a New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle.
Edana is survived by her three daughters, Edana Donohue (James) of Calabash, NC, Gretchen Cherbousky of Calabash, NC, and Amanda Rooker (James) of Colorado Springs, CO; and three grandchildren, Megan Ehret (Heath), Michael Donohue, and James Rooker.
Services will be private with the family.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Music Department at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, NC; the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO); or Lower Cape Fear Hospice who lovingly supported Edana in her final days.
