Born in 1935, Freddie graduated from the S.C School for the Deaf in 1955, and married the love of his life, Louise Boyd Hodge, in 1956. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership that lasted 59 years until her passing in 2015.
Freddie was preceded in death by his beloved wife Louise; his daughter Cindy; his brothers Bill and Herbert; and his sisters Betty, Margie, and Mary Margret.
He is survived by his daughters Rose (Johnny) and Gracie (Mark), Son in Law Jack; grandchildren Ashley, Corey, Jason (Jess), and Shelby(Blake); and great-grandchildren Oliver, Cecilia, Willow, and August. Freddie cherished his family above all else, and his happiest days were often spent fishing or simply being with the people he loved.
Freddie worked for many years at the Charlotte Observer, where his dedication and hard work earned the respect of his colleagues until his retirement in 1993. He was also a proud and active member of the Deaf community, where he built deep connections.
Whether playing cards, casting a line off of Garden City Pier, or laughing with his children and grandchildren, Freddie lived with quiet dignity, deep love, and an open heart. His life was one of purpose and presence—and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A private family gathering will be held to honor his life.
