Gerald Gene Sutterfield passed away peacefully at this home with his family present on Saturday, November 17, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Isaac Shipman Sutterfield and Thelma Marie Busby of Fannon County, TX; his brother, Billy Wayne Sutterfield and his second wife, Joyce Sutterfield. He was the last member of his original family.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Crist-Sutterfield of Longs, SC; his two sons, Gene Sutterfield, Jr. of Boise, ID and Kenneth Sutterfield of Geneva on the Lake, OH; two daughters, Carol Carter of Howe, TX and Cheryl Spencer of McKinney, TX; his step-daughter, Rachel Benton of Summerfield, NC; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom he loved very much.
Gene was a Texas native who moved to Tulsa, OK where he spent the majority of his youth. Gene served his country, enlisting in the Marines at age 16. He served active duty in the Korean War. He then went on to serve in the Air Force, with a specialty in hydraulics. He eventually moved to Denver, CO with his welding business. He found his way into the trucking industry where he was a leader in both sales and logistics for many years. Upon his retirement, he moved with his wife and his many and various pets, to the Myrtle Beach area. He was an avid golfer earning the nickname, “sweet swinger”. He worked at and enjoyed playing several of the courses in the area. He was an active member of Living Water Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school classes. He served as the Chaplain of the North Strand Homeless Shelter for nearly eight years. The shelter was very near and dear to his heart. Gene had a big life and he lived it fully.
A celebration of his life will be held at Living Water Baptist Church, 1569 Hwy 9 East, Longs, SC on Saturday, December 1 at 2pm. Inurnment will be in Florence National Cemetery at 1 pm on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.
His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to North Strand Homeless Shelter in his memory. Donations can be sent to: PO Box 529, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29597.
