She was born on September 15, 1936 in Sanford, Maine. She married “her sweetheart” Herman R. Quirion on October 13, 1956. As a career military family, they were stationed at several Air Force bases in the US. Their final assignment was in Myrtle Beach, SC in December 1969 and is where they decided to raise their family.
Gertrude went by many names in her lifetime. Mom, Memere, Matante, and GG. She impressively remembered everyone’s birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions including extended family. She loved to talk on the phone and keep up with not only her children but her nieces and nephews as well. She was known to always have a good joke to share along with all the family news. She was the matriarch that held the family together. She had a sparkle in her eyes and joy in her heart. She was the best of all of us.
Gertrude was a very devout Catholic. She shared her faith with everyone, especially her children and grandchildren. She attended mass daily until her health declined and she prayed the full rosary and the Divine Chaplet every day until the very end. She was generous with her time, resources, and love.
She leaves behind her only surviving sister Madeleine R. Boucher of Saco, Maine; Her loving husband of almost 68 years Herman and their five children Michael Quirion of Columbus, GA, Ronald (Belen) Quirion of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Denise (Michael) Wainscott of Little River, SC, Karen (David) DuVall of Akron, OH and Kevin (Amy) Quirion of Wesley Chapel, FL; her grandchildren Kristal (Bill) Mahaffey of the home, Michelle (Wesley) Warren of Midway, GA, Bryan Floyd of Longs, SC, Andrew Quirion of Savannah, GA, Sofia Quirion of Columbus, GA, Sam DuVall of Akron, OH, and Nathaniel Quirion of Wesley Chapel, FL. She has six great-grandchildren Jaylon Holman, Lillian Holman and Fox Mahaffey of the home, Adrian Bailey of Columbus, GA, and Camden Warren and Lainey Warren of Midway, GA; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents Jean Paul and Dolores Legere, her siblings Henry Legere, Laurent Legere, Gabrielle Nadeau, and her granddaughter Margarita Bailey.
A special note of immense gratitude to our parent’s caregivers: To Kristal and Bill Mahaffey for the compassionate, loving care you gave to your Memere on a daily basis for so many years. To Denise Wainscott and Ronnie Quirion who took charge of our parent’s care from taking care of finances and doctor visits to hygiene and meals. The rest of us are eternally grateful. She knew how much she was loved.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea, 1100 8th Ave. N., North Myrtle Beach, SC when all of her family can be together. She will be inurned at Our Lady Star of the Sea in the columbarium.
