April 4, 1936 - March 7, 2025
In the early morning hours of March 7, 2025, Herman Ronald Quirion heard the heavenly choir calling his name. We are sure that his sweetheart Gertrude orchestrated his arrival. The two love birds are together again. Je t'aime, ti chou.
He was born on April 4, 1936, in Sanford, Maine. He married and fiercely loved his high school sweetheart Gertrude Legere on October 13, 1956.
Herman, or “Q” as he was called by many was a proud Air Force veteran of 23 years. He was stationed at several bases across the US and volunteered for two tours in Vietnam as a security police officer.
He received the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1966. The citation reads as follows: Staff Sergeant Herman R. Quirion distinguished himself by outstanding achievement as Law Enforcement Patrolman, DaNang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam on May 21, 1966. On that date, Sergeant Quirion’s quick thinking and complete disregard for his own personal safety allowed 300 United States Military Personal that were sleeping in an affected area to seek cover during a severe mortar barrage. He relayed all pertinent information to Central Security Control and the Joint Command Post which assisted immensely in neutralizing the attack. The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Quirion reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
He retired as a Master Sergeant at his last base in Myrtle Beach SC in 1977.
As his military career ended, he began a second career as a Myrtle Beach Police Officer. He retired as a Lieutenant in 1992.
He was loud and gruff, but he was also generous and proud. This is actually the second time we mourn him. The first was in 1994 after his brain aneurysm. He was left with brain damage and seemed like a different person in many ways.
Herman leaves behind his five children: Michael Quirion of Columbus, GA, Ronald (Belen) Quirion of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Denise (Michael) Wainscott of Little River, SC, Karen (David) DuVall of Akron, OH, and Kevin (Amy) Quirion of Wesley Chapel, FL. His grandchildren Kristal (Bill) Mahaffey of the home, Michelle (Wesley) Warren of Midway, GA, Bryan Floyd of Longs, SC, Andrew (Kimberly) Quirion of Savannah, GA, Sofia Quirion of Columbus, GA, Sam DuVall of Akron, OH and Nathaniel Quirion of Wesley Chapel, FL. He has six great-grandchildren Jaylon Holman, Lillian Holman and Fox Mahaffey of the home, Adrain Bailey of Columbus, GA and Camden Warren and Lainey Warren of Midway, GA.
Herman was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Gertrude, his parents Herman and Nellie Quirion, his sister Lorraine Drouin, and his granddaughter Margarita Bailey.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, at 11 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea , 1100 8th Ave N., North Myrtle Beach, SC. He will be interned at Our Lady Star of the Sea in the columbarium.
