Born on June 21, 1953, in Claymont, Delaware, to James Mechell and Helen Carpenter, Joanne lived a life rooted in love, service, and deep care for others. She is survived by her devoted husband, Roy “Lou” Holdren, whom she married on August 1, 1980, in Wilmington, Delaware. Together, they built a life centered on family, loyalty, and unwavering commitment.
Joanne is also survived by her son, Matt Holdren and his partner Danielle Boisvert, to whom she was an extraordinary and deeply beloved mother. She gave endlessly to her family, always placing the needs of others before her own, sacrificing without hesitation and loving without condition.
She built a long and dedicated career in athletics administration, beginning her professional life with the PGA, followed by work at the Duke Golf Course, before transitioning into her longtime role as Secretary to the Athletic Director at Duke University, where she eventually retired. Joanne was known for her dependability, professionalism, and the genuine care she brought to every role—touching the lives of colleagues, athletes, and staff along the way, and forming lifelong friendships.
Joanne loved walking along the beach, where she felt most at peace, and she cherished time spent with family, friends, and especially her grand-dogs Kaiya and Archer. She adored music—especially the Bee Gees—whose songs often filled her space with warmth and joy. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, supported, and safe, offering kindness that was steady, sincere, and deeply felt.
She will be remembered for her loving heart, her selflessness, her quiet strength, and the many lives she touched simply by being herself. Joanne’s love lives on in her family, in the memories she created, and in the countless hearts she left better than she found them.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Lee Funeral Home on Friday, January 2, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
