

Katherine M. Martin, 81, died peacefully Friday, February 19, 2016 at Brightwater.
Katherine was born in 1934 in the Bronx, NY, the first child of Michael J. Feeney and Catherine McDermott Feeney.
She graduated from Aquinas High School in 1952 and a year later she entered the Sisters of Mercy, a religious order dedicated to education and hospital work. After her religious training and five years in schools in New York City, she was assigned to Our Lady of Victory Academy in Dobbs Ferry, NY. It was in OLVA that she would spend the next 36 years of her life as a Social Studies teacher.
She earned her BA from Mary Mount College in Tarrytown, NY and in 1970, a Master’s Degree in history from Manhattan College. In the years that followed, she amassed 30 more graduate credits by attending seminars and summer institutes around the country.
As a teacher, Katherine brought a no-nonsense approach to the classroom that won her the respect of the students and faculty alike. She had the ability to create an atmosphere where learning could take place. She taught the full range of Social Studies from freshman introductory course to advanced placement history to the more gifted.
In 1971 she left Sisters of Mercy and a year later married Victor Martin, whom she met at OLVA. Katherine retired from teaching on 1999 and she and her husband moved to Little River, SC. They both worked at North Strand Helping Hand for approximately 5 years.
She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Katherine is survived by her husband, Victor A. Martin, Jr. and two sisters, Margaret Grifferty of Scarsdale, NY and Nancy Manning of Bronxville, NY.
