Lorraine Rose Summa, 80, of North Myrtle Beach, passed away Friday, December 16th, 2016.
The daughter of the late John Mayo and Eleanor Mayo Cosenza, Lorraine was born in New Haven, CT on May 15th, 1936. After graduating from Central Connecticut Teachers College in 1958, she married the late Kenneth Joseph Summa in 1959. She once said “I wasn’t involved in everything going on in the 1960s - I was raising three children.” At that, she did an excellent job according to the children, Laurie Prentice, Keith Summa, and the late Craig Summa.
After her first husband’s death in 1993 she married the late John McGowan in 1996.
Lorraine was in constant motion, living in 14 towns across 7 states and Puerto Rico. Lorraine had the most beautiful smile, ready ear, easy laugh, and compassionate soul. She was a fierce competitor, a long-suffering Red Sox fan, a late adopter of on-line dating, a horrible singer, a beloved grandmother, a devout friend, amazing sister, and the most wonderful mother anyone could ask for.
She is survived by her two grandchildren, Jack Centra and Zachary Summa, sisters Lola Mayo and Joyce Ghiroli, brother John Mayo Jr., sons-in-law Todd Prentice and Filemon Rodriguez, and daughter-in-law Lorraine Romano, along with innumerable friends from Carolina Italian American Organization, and across the globe.
She was preceded in death by her brother Joseph Mayo and sister Josephine Mayo.
A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, December 20 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 1930 Charlie Hall Blvd., Charleston, SC 29415.
A guestbook is available at www.leefhandcrematory.
