Born in Creswell, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Carnie Oliver and Bonnie Sexton Oliver and a graduate of Creswell High School. After raising her family as a devoted homemaker, Margie worked in retail sales, where her warmth and genuine interest in others made her a friend to many. She was active in several Presbyterian churches before retiring and moving to Wilmington, where she became a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church.
Margie expressed her love through cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, gardening, and painting. She was also an avid reader and loved spending time doing puzzles. She made clothing for family members, from smocked dresses to business suits, and crocheted blankets, toboggans, and tiny hats for premature babies. Above all, she cherished caring for her grandchildren and filling their lives with love, creativity, good food, and treasured memories.
She and her husband, W. Allen Adams, traveled extensively together. After his death, Margie continued to enjoy traveling, taking many cruises with her daughter, Linda. She was known for her kindness, welcoming spirit, and lifelong friendships.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband, W. Allen Adams, her brothers, Maurice (Joyce) and Brantley (Rosalind) Oliver, and her beloved Boston Terrier, Bandit.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Thorburn and Theresa Adams (Arthur Plourde); and her son, Michael Adams (Connie); her sister, Ida June Toppin (Earl). She also leaves six grandchildren—Keith Thorburn (Yvonne French), Rebecca Plourde, Hilary Adams, Kenton Plourde (Vidhi), Matthew Adams (Sarah), and Alison Plourde (Mark)—and seven great-grandchildren: Willow, Sean, Aria, Russell, Harper, Ramona, and Lawson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Margie’s century-long life was defined not only by its length, but by the love she gave and the lives she touched. Her family will carry forward her example of kindness, creativity, devotion, and love.
At Margie’s request, there will be no funeral service. She especially wished for her grandchildren to remain close, because family was the most important thing in her life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to First Presbyterian Church, 125 S. 3rd St., Wilmington, NC 28401.
A century of life. A lifetime of love. A legacy that will live on in all who knew her
