Margot G. Schmalfeldt Lassiter went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 6th 2019. Born in Queens, New York on September 7th 1930, she peacefully passed at her home at the age of 88. Her son, Jeff Schmalfeldt, was at her side while she passed. Also, there were her amazing caretakers, Margaret (Dee) Futch, Mary Jones and Brandy Odle.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana Rhima and her husband, Mike, of Fort Worth, Texas; her son, Jeff Schmalfeldt, of Little River, South Carolina; 7 grandchildren, Michael Rhima, Stephanie Rhima of Dallas, Texas and Jennifer Rhima of Dubai, Michelle Schmalfeldt of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Danielle Schmalfeldt Altman, and her husband Justin, of Florence, South Carolina, Lee and Drew Schmalfeldt of Cronulla, Australia; and daughter-in-law, Anne Schmalfeldt, of Cronulla, New South Wales, Australia.
She was predeceased by her son, Gary Schmalfeldt of Cronulla, Australia.
Marge worked as an office manager at Apollo Neon Sign for almost 10 years and as a receptionist at a busy hair salon. She volunteered a lot of time selling raffle tickets for Cancer Care. She loved all animals and her favorite pet was a Tabby named Snoopy. Marge also loved all her grandchildren and spending time with them whenever she could.
Marge was a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary for 8 years and loved being on or around water. She was a very generous and giving person.
Reading was a passion of hers and she loved romance novels as well as Astrology. While bedridden her favorite shows were on Animal Planet and watching North Woods Law.
Marge loved to travel and frequented Fort Worth where her loving daughter and her family lived. She enjoyed playing cards and loved board games.
Growing up, Mom was a very loving, but, strict mother. I, Jeff, often found myself on the wrong end of the wooden spoon. She pushed all children to do the very best they could at anything we did. Very rarely did she complain about anything, usually just going with the flow and keeping the peace. She loved to cook, especially at Thanksgiving having a house full of family and friends, Herman, my Dad, and Diana, my sister, were all involved in the cooking and baking on that special day.
Marge and Herman, her husband, moved to Little River, South Carolina in 1982, after living in Hicksville, New York since 1958. She liked to sail and she and my Dad would sail almost every weekend aboard the Merlin, a 30’ Morgan sloop. When is season, she loved picking strawberries and blueberries and always brought me some at work. She also loved watching old movies, Kathrine Hepburn and Omar Sharif were among her favorites. While living in New York, she often took in plays in New York City, Fiddler on the Roof and CATS, with a group of ladies who lived close by. She loved casinos as well. Nickel and dime slot machines were as much as she wagered.
She will be missed by all who knew her. Her sweet smile was contagious and even while bedridden, she was always smiling at everyone.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
