Nancy Nelson Kirkner died March 22, 2018 at McLeod Hospital in Loris, following surgery and a long illness. Mrs. Kirkner and her late husband moved in 1979 from Charlotte to Little River, relocating there because of their love of the Grand Strand area.
Mrs. Kirkner was born in Chicago and spent her early childhood years in suburban Oak Park, Illinois. In 1956 she moved with her parents and brother to Charlotte, graduating from East Mecklenburg High School in 1962. Soon after graduation she married Curtis Bane Kirkner.
For many years, both in Charlotte and the Myrtle Beach area, Mrs. Kirkner was employed as a bank teller. Before leaving Charlotte, Mrs. Kirkner also had been a bond broker with Interstate Securities.
Until quite recently, Mrs. Kirkner was a student at Coastal Carolina University, majoring in philosophy and religion and completing more than 3 years' course work. She found the experience one of the most satisfying and enjoyable of her life and had the highest regard for CCU.
Mrs. Kirkner was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, Mearna and Howard Nelson. The only surviving family member is her brother, Phillip Nelson, of Cincinnati, Ohio.
One of the brightest, most special parts of her life was her two black Labrador dogs whom she adored. She had made assurances for their continued loving care in the event of her death.
Funeral arrangements will be private. Mrs. Kirkner was a lifelong lover of horses. Anyone wishing to remember Mrs. Kirkner might consider a contribution to a horse rescue farm or society. Other possible remembrances could be to a homeless shelter or to cancer research.
