Buddy was the son of Nollie Stone Platt and Annie Laura Babson Platt of Little River, SC. Buddy was born on April 23, 1928 in Little River, SC. He received his high school diploma from Little River Wampee High School in 1946 and his BA degree from Wofford College. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant and was a combat veteran of the Korean War with H Company, 2nd Battalion, 32nd Inf. Reg., 7th Inf. Div. in 1951-1952.
After marriage, Buddy and Carolyn moved to Columbia, SC, where he worked for the American Tobacco Company for two years. He then began his career with Exxon Co. USA as a Marketing Representative. After 39 years and living in Columbia, SC, Charlotte, NC, Chapin SC, and Fort Mill SC, he returned to the Grand Strand Area.
Buddy had a natural talent for woodworking and loved to make furniture and help his family with their many projects. He enjoyed keeping a beautiful lawn and flower garden, and his "flower bed" was featured in an article in The Sun News. The backyard of his home has many potted plants and moss hanging in the Live Oak trees, one of which was named Tree of the Month in May 2018 by the City of North Myrtle Beach. The Barbie House he made for his granddaughter was included in an article celebrating Barbie's birthday. He was named the winner of two top awards for painting fire hydrants in North Myrtle Beach. ¬One was a tiger and the other is a lighthouse. He adopted the Beach Access at 20th Avenue South and loved walking the beautiful beach at North Myrtle Beach. He was a member of Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful.
His family includes his wife, Carolyn Thomas Platt; three children, Claudia Rucker and husband, Marty, of Johns Island, SC; Stuart Platt and wife, Carol, of Lexington, SC; and Stephani Canty and husband, Jay, of Charlotte, NC. He is survived by seven grandchildren; Melissa Rucker, Amanda Rucker, Courtney Walters, Shaun Platt, Kimberly Platt, Eliza Platt and Jamison Canty; and one great grandchild, Joshua Platt. He is also survived by a sister, Nester Platt Stanaland of Calabash, N.C.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 23, 2020 at Florence National Cemetery.
