Patricia A. Rutherford

Born December 17, 1947, in Franklin, North Carolina, Patricia was the daughter of the late Evan and Ruth Hogsed. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Patrick Rutherford; her parents; and her brother, George “Bud” Hogsed.

As a child, “Patsy” was the eldest of four children and especially loved spending summers at her grandparents, Daddy Joe and Granny Daisy’s house in Prentiss. Those summers held a special place in her heart.

On August 29, 1967, Patricia and Patrick were married, and together they spent the next 48 years dedicating their lives to each other and their greatest pride and joy—their family.

Nanny loved attending events for her grandchildren and celebrating every milestone, big or small. She never failed to say “Happy Birthday” or make sure there was something sweet waiting at home for her grands (and, if we are being honest, for herself, too).

She enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel, diving into a new book, playing games on her tablet, and cooking during the holidays. No one, not a single person—can make chicken and dumplings quite like Nanny.

In the years following her husband’s passing, Patricia surprised her family (and herself) by discovering a love for working outside in her yard. You could often spot her cutting laps around the property on her golf cart, enjoying the sunshine and doing things her own way.

She loved to talk and was never afraid to share her opinion. She gave wonderful advice, always had a listening ear, and sometimes could be as stubborn as they come. She liked to say that chaos followed her wherever she went. Those who knew her would argue that it wasn’t chaos—she brought entertainment and laughter wherever she went.

Patricia was a longtime member of Tilly Swamp Baptist Church, where her faith was an important part of her life. For decades, you could find her there on Wednesdays and Sundays, rocking babies in the church nursery. Caring for children came naturally to her, and she spent much of her retirement helping care for her own grandchildren and those of her fellow congregation. Generations of children have been held in those two arms.

Patricia’s faith gave her comfort throughout her life, and she had no doubt where she would be when this earthly life was finished. She was welcomed home by her Savior and reunited with her husband and loved ones who went before her. While her family grieves her absence, they find comfort knowing that she is now at peace and free of suffering.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Cindy Hucks (Teddy), Steven Rutherford (Christina), and Christi Coffin (Roy); her grandchildren, Ashley (JM), Haleigh, Evan, Tristan, Carson, and Rilynn; and her great-grandchildren, Kayleigh and Kinslee. She is also survived by her sisters, Kathy Delay and Selma Hogsed, and her brother, Doug Hogsed.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Tilly Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, 4194 Tilly Swamp Rd., Conway, SC 29526. Following the service, the family will receive visitors at the reception hall at Tilly Swamp Baptist Church.
