Many grieve this loss but especially his family. This includes his devoted and loving children: son David Christopher “Buddy” Lee (Verla) and daughter Dorothy Lorraine “Lori” Stocks (Steve); grandchildren: Danny Tobar (Amanda), Erin Tobar (Tim), Julia Wilkes (Ronnie), Faith Lee, Cooper Lee, Max Lamb (Lacey) Lucas Lamb (Kaitlin) Jason Stocks Jr (Chastity) Jami Stocks (Gary); great- grandchildren: Abbie, Luka, Samantha, Jonathan, Linsey, and Madeline, all from Horry County, South Carolina; brother Danny (Julia) of Brunswick, North Carolina; brothers-in-law: Bobby (Sonya) Willocks, Dale (Sandy) Willocks, and David (Teresa) Willocks all of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; and many Friends from his tractor pulling clubs and his round table breakfast buddies.
He and his bride Sandy enjoyed many fun activities and clubs together including square dancing, The Coast Guard Auxiliary, the local Harley Owners Group Association, being a part of the Mark Perry Motorsports racing team at Myrtle Beach Speedway, and Concerned Bikers Association of Brunswick County. They thoroughly enjoyed living in Little River and were fans of eating fresh seafood, especially a good oyster roast. They loved fishing and boating together, especially with their children. They truly wanted to enjoy anything that allowed them to be together and enjoy each other and their friends in an active setting especially the beautiful outdoors that they both valued and appreciated while boating or riding.
Ray was a lifelong resident of Little River. Man of Faith, Cherished Husband, Daddy, Papa, Uncle, Brother, and friend to many. Born in his parent’s home in Little River, he was a lifelong and devoted resident of the area he so loved. As a young man he especially enjoyed working with his father on the family shrimp boat which gave him an immense love for the water. When he graduated from Wampee High School in June 1962 he immediately continued his love for mechanics. This took him into work within an Auto Body shop while pursuing his love for dirt track auto racing which he enjoyed until 1970. At that time, he began his career with the City of North Myrtle Beach where he first worked with the water and sewer department where he ultimately became the head of that department. He was then tasked to lead the City Garage and later became the only Fleet Management Supervisor. for North Myrtle Beach, as the town was growing and being developed. He ultimately retired from North Myrtle Beach in the 90’s after decades of faithful service to the area he loved. He was quick with a joke but would always share how he felt in a manner that made folks feel his care and genuine love for them. All who knew him valued his hard work, tenacity, leadership, and genuine care for others.
In retirement, Ray was a well-respected and loved member of the East Coast pullers and Lakeside pullers, Tractor pulling clubs. He could often be found there on the weekends showing off his skilled driving of one of the machines he had mechanically created. He had a knack for not only being fast but being a character within these awesome organizations. He was respected, admired, and well loved by this group of friends, and loved them in return.
As a father, he was a great provider and mentor. As a husband, he was a devoted and loyal companion, and as a family member, he was cherished and adored by so many! It is because of this that we celebrate his life and are grateful that he is no longer in pain but is now with his bride and all his family and beloved friends that went before him. While he will be greatly missed. We are grateful to know that we will one day see him again in a place where there is no pain or suffering and will be reunited with him. We rest in the promise and full knowledge that he is with our Lord and Savior, living eternally with those who loved him as we do.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the preferred charity of Mr. Ray and many of his fellow tractor pullers: the Waccamaw Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina, 400 Flemington Dr., Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450, https://boysandgirlshomes.org/
