

Our beloved brother, Russell “Russ” Maffay, passed away on September 19, 2026 following a gallant battle with cancer. Russell was born on January 10, 1959 in Cheverly, Maryland to John and Elizabeth (Kaser) Maffay.
So much life was lived in his 67 years. He was a lifelong bachelor who traveled extensively and made friends in many countries. Russ was an avid outdoorsman and he loved camping and hiking in nature. An athlete throughout his life, he played high school basketball where he won several accolades. As an adult he enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, hiking, kayaking, and cycling. He enjoyed them all! After his retirement, he continued living his life to the fullest, making new friends and taking up pickle-ball!
Russ was a dedicated firefighter and EMT. He retired from the Washington, D.C. Fire Department following 30 years of faithful service. After his retirement, he moved to the beach, yet he remained loyal to his brotherhood at the DCFD.
Building a stronger relationship with the Lord at Lowcountry Community Church (LC3). After his diagnosis, he took solace in his relationship with Him. On July 12th 2026, he publicly professed his commitment to Jesus when he was baptized in the gentle waves of the ocean at LC3’s Beach Baptism.
He is survived by his five loving siblings, six nieces and nephews, and six great-nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday October 24th, 2:00 pm at LC3. 4430 Murrells Inlet Road, Murrells Inlet, SC.
The family expresses their gratitude for those who have prayed and supported them over the past 14 months. Russ touched many hearts at LC3 and in the surrounding community.
