The daughter of Frank & Rose Martens, Sue was born on October 7th 1947 in Queens, NY. She graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood, NY. She married her husband, Vic Zajkowski on February 6th 1966 in Queens, NY. They were married for 55 years before his passing in 2021.
Sue always described herself as an old soul & that reins true in her life experiences. From her cosmetology career, to being a dental hygienist, Girl Scout troop leader, at-home hair dresser & occasional seamstress. She was a woman of many talents who really did it all. Sue was a big proponent of learning one new thing every day, usually from her grandkids. But she also taught us so much, like playing the piano, cooking, sewing & all manners of crafts.
Her relationship with her daughters was paramount to her, she loved spending time with Lori & Lisa. Growing up in Glendale & then Cornwall, Sue was passionately engaged in every facet of their lives. She shared a deeply loving bond with her daughters, one built on tenderness, patience, and unwavering devotion. Their relationship was marked by laughter, understanding, and a respect that grew stronger with time. Above all, her love was a steady presence in her daughters lives.Vic & Sue’s home was a warm and inviting place where friends became family. As people came and went, they kept their love with them. That kindness and love will carry on with them even now that she’s gone.
For Sue, her life was her family & her family was her life. There was nothing more important to her than spending time with her loved ones. Our best memories were created (and will stay with us) because of her. Like our christmases, where she wrapped each present with meticulous beauty & care, while still being the ultimate host & cooking amazing meals. Family vacations, like cruises or even a day trip to the beach, were made better simply from her joy in being around us. In fact, upon moving to South Carolina in 2020, most days you could find her on the beach, enjoying the sounds of Frankie Valli on her speaker & soaking up the sun.
Sue was one of the most outgoing people you would ever meet, quick to make a friend anywhere she went. When you were with her, you felt a warmth that transcended how long she knew you. She would treat someone she met yesterday with the care and affection she treated her own family with! Sue was a great listener, lending an ear to whomever needed her.
Sue dedicated her life to taking care of others, with so much love in her heart that she had to give it to everyone else. Her legacy lives on in her family & the lives of the people she cared about. Anyone in Sue’s presence truly knew what love felt like.
Sue is survived by her daughters Lori (Tim) and Lisa (Jim) and her grandchildren, Victoria (Chandler), Alexandria and Sydney. She’s also survived by her sister, Kathy as well as countless nieces, nephews, godchildren, friends & her dog, Scruffy. She was predeceased by her husband Vic, as well as her parents.
