He is also survived by his brother, Ted Simpson, and Ted’s wife, Tish, of Huntersville, North Carolina; his sister, Sarah Gibson, and her husband, Danny, of Monroe, North Carolina; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donnie Simpson.
Vann grew up outside Matthews, North Carolina, attending Matthews Junior High School before graduating from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte in 1961. He continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the North Carolina School of Banking in Chapel Hill, and the Realtors Institute at UNC.
During the 1970s, Vann served as president of his family’s real estate development and construction company. He spent most of his professional career as a banker, working at various institutions primarily in mortgage banking. His career reflected his strong work ethic, business knowledge, and dedication to his profession.
Vann also proudly served in the North Carolina Air National Guard from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1969, attaining the rank of staff sergeant.
Music was one of Vann’s lifelong passions. While attending Matthews Junior High School, he learned to read music and play the trumpet, later learning to play the guitar. He was honored to march in the Charlotte Christmas Parade during his school years. Throughout high school and beyond, he played guitar with several musical groups, most notably The Check-Mates of Charlotte. The group performed at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion, Park Center in Charlotte, and numerous colleges.
Vann enjoyed many styles of music, but beach music and doo-wop held a special place in his heart. He developed friendships with numerous beach music band members who performed along the coast. Traditional gospel music was another favorite. Later in life, he played guitar and sang with Elation, a Charlotte-based group that performed at retirement communities throughout the area. Music remained a meaningful part of his life and a way to connect with others.
Following his retirement, Vann moved to Hickory, North Carolina, where he joined Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He was commissioned as a Stephen Minister and sang in the church chancel choir.
He also enjoyed playing golf with friends at Lake Hickory Country Club. Above all, he treasured visits with his daughter, Julie, his son-in-law, and three grandchildren in Chicago, especially the family’s time together at Grand Beach, Michigan.
Family was always an important part of Vann’s life. He remained close to many family members and friends throughout the years. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Maggie, who loved to snuggle with him during his illness. Vann will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
After their move to North Myrtle Beach, Vann and Robin embraced the coastal lifestyle they loved. Vann continued to enjoy golf and sharing dinners with friends at The Surf Golf and Beach Club.
Travel was also a special part of Vann’s life. He and Robin enjoyed traveling together, including a memorable family trip to Hawaii with his daughter and her family. They also enjoyed trips to the North Carolina mountains with friends and the Caribbean islands, creating many special memories along the way. Unfortunately, his illness eventually curtailed their travels.
Vann and Robin joined Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church and became active members of the congregation, particularly enjoying the Life Together Sunday School Class. Their church community and friendships became an important part of their lives.
Vann will be remembered for his love of music, his dedication to family, his friendships, his faith, and his appreciation for the coast. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of love that will continue through his family and all who knew him.
