Our most precious matriarch, Agnes Mary Mascarenhas (nee Sequeira), age 97, departed her loving family on January 6, 2024 in Delray Beach, Florida. Agnes transitioned to heaven peacefully surrounded by her son, daughter, son-in-law, grandson and granddaughter. She epitomized dignity, grace and elegance, and was always warm, gracious and generous. Her gentle smile made everyone who had the good fortune to know her feel at ease and smile brightly.
Agnes was born and raised in Mangalore, India. Her convent school education, at St Agnes Convent School, greatly impacted the rest of her life, as she was a devout Catholic with strong values. At 15, she was preparing to enter medical school in Mysore when her life took an unexpected turn, because her father passed away. His last wish was that his only daughter be “well settled” as soon as possible. Medical school was not a reality any more.
Agnes married Aloysius “Louie” Mascarenhas in St Sebastian’s Church in Mangalore on June 26, 1946. Louie proved to be a loving husband and they were married for 61 years until his death in 2007, living charmed lives in Uganda, England and New Jersey.
Agnes was a firm believer that women were capable of being nurturing wives, good mothers and also have meaningful careers. As her dreams of becoming a doctor were not fulfilled, she worked in senior administrative roles, until her retirement. Aside from all of her responsibilities as the family matriarch, she was a prolific reader, a world traveler and an accomplished chef. She enjoyed classical music, movies and crafts, but most of all, she enjoyed people. Agnes had a strong sense of who she was unyielding in her values. This is the very soul of who she was as a person.
Agnes relished every moment with her 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was present at every event and milestone of their lives to show her love and support and was lovingly called “Gigi” after she had great grandchildren. She was truly the heart of her family, a most devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her son, Michael Mascarenhas (formerly of NJ, currently in FL), her daughter Patricia Baptist and her husband Selwyn (formerly of NJ, currently in FL), her granddaughter Maria Horton, her husband Nathaniel and their children Eloise and Noah (NJ), her grandson Justin, his wife Stefanie and their children Madelyn and Margo (NJ), her daughter-in-law, Carol Mascarenhas (England), her grandson Julian Mascarenhas, his wife Marija Milosavljevic and their son Arun (England) and her granddaughter Isabelle Mascarenhas, her husband Calbert Bradford and their children Baruch and Cushla (England). Agnes is also survived by her brother Terrance Sequeira (Florida) and countless nieces, nephews and “bonus” children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends who absolutely adored her. She is predeceased by her husband, Louie, son Vincent, and siblings, Malcolm, Aelred, Raphael and Ignatius.
