

lifelong resident of Livingston,
N.J., passed away on Sunday,
Feb. 16, 2020.
He was born to Henrietta
and Charles J. Schilling. Herbert
served his country proudly
in the U.S. Army during
World War II in the Pacific Theater
as a sergeant field medic.
He proudly served his community
as a lifelong member of
the Livingston Volunteer Fire
Department. He was a charter
member of the Livingston First
Aid Squad, and a volunteer
with the Madison First Aid
Squad back in the 1950s.
As a successful entrepreneur,
in 1964 Herbert founded
Mendham Plywood & Building
Products in Mendham, N.J.,
and developed and expanded
the business into a flourishing
lumberyard and building supply
company.
Through the years he served
the Mendham community as
president of the Mendham Rotary
Club, with ongoing support
to the many organizations
in the Borough of Mendham.
He loved working on his Model
T and Model A Ford pickup
trucks, and drove and displayed
them in the Mendham
Labor Day Parade for many
years.
In all his years he loved the
seashore, where he spent time
with his family and friends
making so many memories
with his wife and children.
He was a gifted carpenter,
builder and craftsman with too
many talents to name.
He shared his love for hunting
with his family through the
years, and went on many hunting
trips with all his children
and their families.
Gardening was a passion. He
always started all his plants
from seed in the early spring to
have an amazing bounty of tomatoes
and so many other vegetables
that he always shared
with family and friends.
Spending time with his all
his grandchildren, he loved to
bake cookies and apple pies
making so many wonderful
memories with them.
As a husband, father, grandfather
and friend, he was the pillar
of strength, love and support
throughout our lives. May
he rest in Peace.
Herbert was the beloved husband
of the late Genevieve
Schilling; loving father of Deborah
Jan Schilling of Oxford,
Maine, Jan Barbara McCrystal
and her husband William, Herbert
Harold Schilling Jr and his
wife Jennifer; cherished grandfather
of Noelle R. Schilling, Jacob
L. Schilling, Audrey H.
Schilling, and William H. W.
McCrystal.
He was the dear brother of
Robert Schilling and his wife,
Pat, Barbara Van Arsdale and
her husband Bill, and was
predeceased by siblings Dorothy
Rimelis and her husband
Ed, Ruth Lovenguth and her
husband Fred, and Charles
Schilling and his wife Marie.
Herbert also leaves behind
many loving nieces, nephews,
extended family and friends.
The family will receive relatives
and friends at the Quinn-
Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E.
Mt. Pleasant Ave., on Friday,
Feb. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m., followed
by a Fireman’s Service.
All family and friends are invited
to a service at the funeral
home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday,
Feb. 22, with burial to follow at
Hilltop Cemetery in Mendham.
In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Livingston
Fire Department or the Livingston
First Aid
