

Horace Marucci, M.D., PhD in Urology and in Latin American history, passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2013. His family will receive relatives and friends at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., on Thursday, 4-8 PM. The Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be offered at St. Joseph’s Church, 44 Benvenue Ave., West Orange, at 10 AM. The Committal service will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Horace and Marie Marucci Fund, c/o Rutgers Univeristy Alumni Assoc., 7 College Ave., New Brunswick, NJ 05901 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
He was a graduate of Rutgers University in 1940 and Hahneman Medical School in 1944. In 1946 Dr. Marucci married Marie Miele and in that year he served as Captain and Surgeon in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in Germany until 1947 earning the Army Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
After serving his country, Dr. Marucci opened a general practice in Maplewood. After several years he and Marie moved to Pennsylvania to receive his Boards in Urology. In 1956 their daughter Catherine was born. Dr. Marucci’s fifty year career as a surgeon included Chief of Urology at St. Mary’s Hospital in Orange , Orange Memorial Hospital as well as Saint Barnabas Medical Center; he was also a consultant at East Orange Veterans Hospital. He maintained offices in East Orange and later in West Orange. In 1970 he was honored by the Alberonese Society.
At the age of 70 his interest in Latin American history led him to Seton Hall University where he earned his Masters Degree and then in 1982 he entered Rutgers University and received his Doctorate after writing his 600 page thesis on the history of an American smelting company in Mexico.
On May 1, 1995, Dr. Marucci was honored by Rutgers University for having received two doctorates fifty years apart and the oldest person in the history of Rutgers to receive a doctorate.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 67 years, Marie (Miele), his devoted daughter Catherine and her husband Patarick and his loving grandson Patrick Horace; also surviving is he brother Germano and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
