James and I were on the first counseling staff of Essex County College in 1968.  Our counseling staff was a great team of dedicated and talented innovators  who shaped ECC.  I enjoyed working with Jim and last saw him in circa 1988 when he visited me where I was the Dean of Student Services at Sierra Community College, Rocklin, California.  I have always been amazed that he remained so dedicated to ECC for all those years.  My sincere sympathy to Jim's family and may he rest in peace.

My heart is broken.  Mr Johnson was my counselor at Essex County College.  Due to personal issues, I withdrew, and after 10 years I reached out on 2/8/2019  to tell him that I would acquire my degree at ECC as an online student.  He was so elated.  Today I reached out to tell him I graduated from SNHU with honors and he has transitioned.  He was a caring person and his advice became my affirmation to never give up because everyone doesn't give up on you.  He believed in me, thank you sir you did good and changed lives especially mine. (graduated high school in 1978) NEVER GIVE UP! God bless!

My condolences to the family and friends of Dr Jim Johnson. Today is May 10, 2023, the day i found out my favorite counselor has passed away.  Thank You for the mental and physical help you offered me through my journey of college and even life itself. You were always there for me and I am so hurt. We love Dr Johnson. Very sorry to hear of Dr. Johnson’s passing. I knew him since 1990, when I first came to Essex County College. After my graduation in 1993, I kept in touch with  Dr. Johnson.  He was a very warm human being, always willing to help others. 

Dr. Johnson  was a guidance counselor for 54 years at Essex County College. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my Uncle Jim (Uncle Butch as he was known to us). 
I regret the years that have gone by since I last saw my uncle and the miles of physical distance between us, but I have the fondest memories of visiting my uncles home and being in the company of my uncle, my (favorite) aunt Naomi and my cousin Gary. I loved those visits. 
I wish peace to all that knew and loved him.

As I mentioned to you this afternoon, I have known your Dear Father for many years. I began my Tenure at Essex County College in 1974  and I retired in 1984.  He was one of the first people I met and he was  not only a good friend and colleague but an extremely conscientious  individuals who truly cared for his students. I am sure his loss will be felt by many of his students and his colleagues. He never had an enemy or ever said a bad word about anyone or anything. I am certain that anyone who knew him loved him. Jim was a dear friend during the many years that we worked at Essex County College. His hard work, dedication to students and warm personality made him a beloved and highly valued member of the college community. I enjoyed all my conversations and college activities with Jim. Over his career, Jim helped a vast number of students. While I am deeply saddened by losing such a good friend, I am certain that I will see him again in heaven.

This is a sad loss, and I am grieved to hear it. I have known Jim Johnson since 1969 when I first joined the college faculty, and through the decades he was always there: a dependable, low-key, supportive and kind presence, ready with good will and even-tempered help for colleagues as well as students.

Just received the saddening news.  Mr. Johnson was always a very kind person and it was always a blessing  to be in his company. We are living thru some really trying times.

It was really sad to hear the passing of Dr. Johnson. I have always been worried about how he was doing. I only got to know him for a very short period of time, but he always has a smile on his face every time he passes by my office and greets me "Good morning Angelica".
