

John J. Grobe, Jr., 85, of Livingston, passed away at his residence in Livingston with his loving family by his side. They will receive relatives and friends at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., on Sunday, 4 until 8 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Philomena’s Church, 386 S. Livingston Ave., on Monday at 10 AM followed by the committal service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
Jack was born in 1929 in Kearney and grew up with his parents, John J. Grob, Sr. and Rose (Bowles) Grob South Orange. After graduating Seton Hall Prep and Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. in 1946 while still in high school; he became a full time employee in 1951. Later that year he took a leave of absence to serve four years in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps. serving at the Pentagon. He returned to Con Edison in 1955 and held various managerial positions eventually being appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer. In 1962 he was a member of the start-up crew for Con Edison’s Indian Point Unit NO. 1, the first commercial nuclear power plant to be granted a construction permit by the Atomic Energy Commission. John was recognized internationally as an expert in the field of atomic energy. He retired in 1991 as Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer for Con Ed. and spent time taking courses at local schools and volunteering his time to those in need. Jack will be fondly remembered for his love of discussing politics and his prolific writing of letters to the editor. A longtime parishioner of St. Philomena’s Church, his love of God and family were his joys.
Jack met his loving wife, the former Adele Moran in Vailsburg at the local sweet shop. They married in 1953 and moved to Livingston in 1959. He leaves behind his childrenDelia and son-in-law John O’Donnell, Alanna Grob, John J. Grob III, Frances (Fay) and son-in-law Bruce Horlacher, Thomas Grob and his darling granddaughter Colleen Elizabeth O’Donnell.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Philomena’s Church.
