
John Patrick McCabe was born on September 20th, 1933, in Jersey City, NJ to Margaret (Durkin) and John A. McCabe. The McCabe’s lived in Kearny, New Jersey. He attended Saint Cecilia’s Grammar school and later Kearny high school. John was known to many in Kearny as Buster.
John excelled and had a passion for sports from a very young age and played varsity football, basketball, and baseball all four years at Kearny High School. He was later admitted to the Kearny High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
After high school he was drafted into the army during the Korean War, he was stationed in Alaska. Upon returning from the Korean War, he attended Fairleigh Dickinson University with a major in advertising and marketing. He began his career, and for most of his life, worked as a sales representative in the banking industry.
John loved the Jersey Shore, and he met his wife of 59 years (Marianne Brady) at the Parker House in Spring Lake, NJ. Married shortly thereafter, the couple had 2 children, John Michael and Elizabeth. They moved to Livingston, NJ and became members of St. Philomena Church in 1967 until they moved to Island Heights, NJ in 1987.
John was married to his wife Marianne for 59 years. Marianne passed away this past May. John referred to Marianne as “his world”. John loved his children and his grandson Asher. He was also a wonderful uncle and godfather to several nieces and nephews.
Even as an adult he continued to play basketball in adult leagues in Livingston and the Morristown YMCA. He enjoyed several years of playing for the team sponsored by Landmark with dear friends.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Marianne Brady McCabe and his parents John and Margaret McCabe.
He is survived by his children John Michael and Elizabeth McCabe. His grandson Asher Nelson and his sister Catherine O'Brien.
