Joe was born on April 3,1975 with Spina Bifida and after a few years of using leg braces was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. Joe was always upbeat, keeping a positive attitude despite his disability. He had many friends from school and was able to connect with many other people through technology. Joe cherished his meaningful relationships made either in person or online. He loved collaborating with friends on projects such as helping to edit a friend’s book or doing web design. He was a natural with technology and was an avid gamer. Over the years Joe also utilized communication via HAM and CB radio; his handle was “Night Hawk,” inspired by his love of hawks. He also held a job in computers which was very satisfying for him.
When Joe was a child, he participated in the Special Olympics for the shotput and javelin where he won several medals. He was a graduate of West Orange High School and was always surrounded by friends. Joe also participated in a bowling league during his high school years. He loved to have his friends visit him at home and just hang out together.
Joe always welcomed visits from his grandparents, brothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He especially enjoyed barbeques with his brothers. Joe was able to vacation frequently with his grandparents who took him to Virginia, South Carolina, Virginia Beach, and Florida to spend time with family, and of course go to Disney World. He also enjoyed sleepovers with his aunts and many movie nights. There were always family celebrations for birthdays, holidays, weddings, christenings, etc. that Joe was a huge part of.
Joe helped his family and friends in many ways, and as the resident computer expert and problem solver, he was the one to turn to for these issues. He thrived on helping in any way he could and didn’t stop until a resolution was found. This is a true testament to his character: No matter the hardships or the issues thrown his way, he was a fighter and never gave up.
Joe found goodness in all and believed and trusted in the world around him and is truly a “hero” to us all through his example: he lived his life without complaint and always made “lemonade out of lemons.”
Joe is survived by Aunts: Carol Filak (Michael), Donna Jackson (Roy), and Janice Hoffman; Siblings: Christopher Hoffman and nephews Gavin and Austin Hoffman; William Hoffman; and Brittany Hoffman; Cousins: Jennie Richter and Henry Richter: Christine (John) Chartier and Adeline, Collete, Julianne, Marinette Chartier: Andrea (Aaron) Haynes and Olivia and Natalie Haynes: Maureen (Joseph) Allen and Brooklyn and Lucas Allen: Caitlyn (David) Barba, and Blake and Finley Barba; Stephen (Theepica) Jackson, Bryan Jackson; Great Aunt Bette Gurry and many other dear family members and friends.
