Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey he also lived in Wildwood and Livingston.
He was predeceased by his father, Joseph Sr., his mother Angelina (DeStefano), and his brothers Albert and Anthony.
He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Darlene (Huntley), and sons, Joseph Michael the Third and Matthew Angelo, and his adored poodle, Summer Breeze.
Joseph graduated from Rider University, and did some post graduate work at C.W. Post before deciding to go to Medical School. He attained his medical degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Rome, Italy with honors.
On his return to the United States he completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in Psychiatric Medicine at Bergen Pines Hospital. In 1977 he opened his medical practice in Union on Galloping Hill Road where he was still practicing up until a few months ago.
Dr. Mauti was on the staff of Saint Barnabas, Trinitas and Union Hospitals. He served on The Medical Executive Board at Union Hospital until its closure. He also was the Medical Director of the Drug and Alcohol Program at Union Hospital. He sat on the board of directors of the former Summit Bank. Early in his career, he was appointed and served as a commissioner on the Elizabeth Board of Education.
Dr. Mauti spent most of his childhood in Wildwood making pizzas in his father’s restaurant. Wildwood in the fifties had many nightclubs which is where he developed his passion for music, especially Doo Wop. He also loved cars and model trains which he shared with his sons.
Dr. Mauti loved taking care of his patients. He always treated them as if they were family. He never wanted any recognition for anyone he helped, even outside of medicine. It was his joy knowing that he could help even if the person never knew that he had.
Aside from mentioning his love for his dear cousins the Papetti’s and the Puleos there are so many dear friends that he loved as family. It would also be remiss not to mention Debbie that has been his office manager since opening the practice and Karie who both spent many years assisting him and taking phenomenal care of his patients.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, from 4:00PM to 8:00PM, at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 145 East Mount Pleasant Ave, Livingston, NJ.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 10:00AM, at Saint Philomena Roman Catholic Church, 386 S Livingston Ave, Livingston, NJ, followed by a Committal Service at Gate of Heaven Cemetery & Mausoleum, 225 Ridgedale Ave, East Hanover, NJ.
