Margaret Barbara Kozlowski-Susskind

A longtime resident of Essex County, Barbara devoted much of her life to caring for and educating others. Born on July 31, 1932, to Stanley and Esther Baker, she graduated from Hunter College and began her career as a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City, where she worked in the operating room. She later taught nursing before becoming a beloved school nurse at Mt. Hebron School in Montclair, New Jersey, where she was remembered for her warmth, competence, and care for generations of students.

Barbara had a deep appreciation for the beauty, history, and richness of life. She loved music of all kinds, with a particular passion for opera and the symphony. She delighted in travel, art, culture, wonderful food, fashion, fine jewelry and gemstones, and learning about the people, places, and history that shaped the world around her. She was also deeply generous, sharing freely with the people she loved and often finding ways to make others feel cared for and remembered.

She shared many happy years with her beloved husband, Arthur Susskind. Together they enjoyed traveling, sailing, attending concerts and cultural events, and building a life filled with shared experiences and treasured memories. Arthur preceded her in death.

Barbara is survived by her older sister, Pauline Conroy, age 100; her grandniece, Joe’l Bocchino; and her grandnephew, Justin Bocchino.

Having lived a long and full life, Barbara leaves behind memories of a woman who cared deeply, appreciated beauty, remained curious about the world, and gave generously to those around her. In accordance with her wishes, her family will hold an intimate memorial and later scatter her ashes privately.

She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
