Maria del Carmen Vicente, loved and adored by many, passed on to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 1, 2020. She was 94 years old. Born in Luanco, Spain on August 13, 1925, she moved to Cuba years later where unbeknownst to her, she would meet the love of her life, Sal. She moved to the United States with her husband, son Sal and daughter, Maria in 1964 and eventually made their permanent home in East Orange, NJ. She was a teacher of mathematics and Spanish for many years at Essex County College, Paterson High School and Passaic High School. She also taught Spanish to executives at Berlitz School in Summit. A devout Catholic, Maria attended mass frequently at St. John’s RC Church in Orange and was very active in the church.
She is predeceased by her husband, Salvador Vicente Sr. and her son, Salvador Vicente, Jr. Maria is survived by her daughter, Maria Cristina Passerini and her husband Richard; daughter in law Margarita Ruiz Vicente, sister Ana Martinez and husband Leon; five grandchildren Alex Vicente and his wife Tina; Cristina Dermody and her husband, Steven, Diana Schirrmacher and her husband Jeffrey, Adriana Lapolla and her husband Larry, Dante Passerini and his wife Gabrielle; as well as thirteen great-grandchildren: Olivia and Emma Vicente, Adelina, Eliana, Isa Carmina, and Seamus Dermody, Evan, Nathan, and Alina Schirrmacher, Dean and Dominick Lapolla, and Daniella and Gabriella Passerini. She will be greatly missed by all.
Any donations may be made to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation in memory of her late son, Salvador Vicente Jr.
Visitation is on Sunday, February 9, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston, NJ.
Funeral Mass is on Monday, February 10 at St. John’s R.C. Church, 94 Ridge St., Orange, NJ, 10 a.m.. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, NJ.
