Michael was known for his style, fashion sense, dancing, charisma and magnetic personality. He was a stylist before it even became a popular form of art. His impeccable fashion sense was unmatched. He not only styled his brothers but his sisters, as well. Michael was a featured model in several fashion shows. His 6’1” thin frame was the perfect physique for the Gentleman’s Quarterly (GQ) fashions, that he was infamous for wearing.
Michael was always the life of the party. He could be counted on to maintain a seat at the table for all family gatherings. Michael also hosted events and enjoyed entertaining. He was a phenomenal dancer who dominated the soul train line and mastered every dance craze including the hustle, disco and freestyle. Michael had a love for driving high-end expensive cars and was notorious for owning Cadillacs like his Dad.
Michael began his career with the Newark Board of Education and later accepted a temporary position at the College of Medicine and Dentistry as an A/P Technician. Three months later, his career took off after he was offered and accepted a permanent position. After the renaming to the University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ), Michael was promoted to an Administrative Analyst. Having worked on the Newark campus for 15 years, Michael was then assigned to supervise the AP Department on the Piscataway Campus. There, he developed a process that the entire University still uses to this date. This innovative process was the retrieval request for Checks, Travel advance, Travel Expense and Honoraria‘s thru the UH portal for departmental use throughout the University. In 2018, Michael retired after 42 years of faithful and dedicated service.
Michael’s compassionate spirit enabled him to be an extraordinary caretaker for his Father and Aunts Maxine and Zelma. Michael was preceded in death by his Mother, Geraldine Lewis and Father, Rodgers L. Lewis. He leaves five siblings to cherish his memory: Rodger Howard Lewis, Cassandra Copeland (Anthony), Ronald Lewis (Jane), Richard Lewis, Andrea Lewis-Walker, a dear friend, Douglass Gregory Garland, and a host of nieces and nephews.
