Pleasant Avenue Livingston, NJ, on Monday November 29, 2021 from 3-7 PM.
Neil McNulty was born and raised in what he considered God’s country, Bayonne, NJ. He was the proud Irish son of Neil (County Tyrone) and Margaret (Maggie) Hanlon (Donegal). He was known as “Nunu” to his childhood friends and enjoyed keeping in touch with many of them throughout his life. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957, Neil earned a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ. He became a Certified Public Accountant for the IRS where he worked for 35 years until his retirement. As an international tax examiner, Neil often served as an expert government resource in Washington DC. His career also included many years as an adjunct Professor at Rutgers and Seton Hall Universities. He furthered his professional experience in post “retirement” as a consultant for Dreyfus Securities in NYC.
Neil married the love of his life, Barbara Condon, in 1961 and together they raised five children in Livingston, NJ. He was devoted to his Catholic faith and was a member of St. Philomena Church. Neil was known to give back to the community, serving on many school and church committees. He was President of the Father’s Club at Seton Hall Prep, where he received an honorary degree in 1987, and even until recent weeks, enjoyed attending many SHP games. Neil could often be seen behind the grill at football games, organizing fundraisers or supporting athletic events. For over 15 years, Neil spent each Tuesday volunteering at St. John’s soup kitchen in Newark, serving the homeless. He made many friendships and would regularly meet up with the “Tuesday crew” in the years that followed.
Always a sports enthusiast, Neil was a 50-year Giants season ticket holder and remained loyal to his team through the good seasons and bad. He especially loved coaching his children and their friends in Little League and rarely missed one of their hockey, football, basketball, soccer, softball games or Irish dance competitions. His passion for his children and their activities was only surpassed when his grandchildren came along. “Grampy” would often carry his chair to set up camp in left field, claim his spot in the bleachers or find the best seat in an auditorium. He would gather the weekly activities of his thirteen beloved grandchildren and make sure he fairly divided his time. Whether it was a game, a concert or an occasion, he was there. He was so involved in his grandchildren’s lives that he was on a first name basis with coaches, teachers, doctors and crossing guards! Everyone knew and loved Grampy.
Family was the center of Neil’s life and he made many sacrifices to provide them with the gifts of faith, education and service . He was the youngest of five children and married into a family of eleven. As with his devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren, Neil’s love for his brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces and nephews was immeasurable. He enjoyed family trips and celebrations, a cold Bud and summers at the Jersey Shore. He loved a good joke, was an avid reader, was proud of his Irish heritage and blessed his family with a lifetime of memories.
Neil will be deeply missed by Barbara (nee Condon), his adored wife of 60 years, their children and spouses: Neil (Karen) McNulty, Allison (Michael) Tevlin, Kathleen (Tom) Magnier, Douglas (Esther) McNulty and Kenny McNulty; his treasured grandchildren, Lauren Keefe (Brian), Neil and Meghan McNulty; Michaela, Brian and Sean Tevlin; Thomas, Christopher, Matthew and Michael Magnier; and Mina and Douglas McNulty, Jr. Neil is now reunited in heaven with his cherished grandson, Brendan Patrick Tevlin. He is also survived by his dear brother Hugh “Buddy” McNulty and was predeceased by siblings Catherine Wilson, Mary Malloy and Patrick “Joe” McNulty.
The many family members and friends he met along the way will forever remember his smile, laughter, guidance, and heart of gold. He was a model father, loving grandfather, beloved brother, dedicated uncle and a loyal, devoted husband.
