Thomas W. Cooney

June 7, 1933May 16, 2020

Thomas W. Cooney, “Poppy”, 86, of Livingston, New Jersey passed-away on May 16th, 2020, at home. Born June 7, 1933, he is predeceased by his parents Patrick and Marion Cooney (nee Sullivan), brothers Robert, Raymond, James, and Patrick. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years Diane J. Cooney (nee Stafford), sons Thomas and wife Cathy of Livingston, Daniel and his wife Robin of Oldwick, NJ, Darren of Califon, NJ, brother Edward and wife Gloria of Livingston, sister Marilyn Cimino of Old Bridge, NJ, sister Delores Wilson of Springfield, NJ and his beloved grandchildren Thomas, Haley, Megan, Sydney, and Ryan, a large extended family, and many friends.

Born and raised in New York City, Thomas was a Golden Gloves boxer and a formidable fast pitch windmill softball pitcher in his youth. A lifelong Teamster, he worked in the trucking industry for Helms Express and St. Johnsbury Trucking for 37 years, before retiring in 1993. He settled in Livingston in 1963, later becoming a Fourth-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Known for his infectious work ethic, he was an avid gardener, passionate New York Yankee fan, and when he was still able, assisted with annual storage and packing of the Camuso Christmas Display in Livingston. He spent his later years with his family, especially his grandchildren, perfecting the most important and cherished job he ever had; as “Poppy”.

Arrangements are under the care of Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston. Due to current restrictions and concern for the safety of others, private internment services will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover with a memorial service planned for a future date.
