Alan Lee “Al” Wilson, 65, of Brighton, died unexpectedly on March 26, 2017 at Lutheran Medical Center in Denver, CO. Al was born January 17, 1952 in Denver, Colorado to Frances June (Prechtl) and James Albert Wilson. He was a 1970 graduate of JFK High School in Denver.
Al proudly served in Vietnam while in the United States Army from 1971 to 1974. He was stationed in Thailand where he served as a part of the elite Army Intelligence group. After his honorable discharge, he returned to civilian life marrying Susan Jill Ingwersen on August 23, 1975 in Golden, CO. They were married for more than 41 years.
In 1976 Al joined the Westminster Police Department, retiring in 2015. During his years as an officer, he completed FBI training, served as a commander, a training officer, and instructor. He was the head of the Traffic Unit for the PD and had trained many officers throughout the state. He founded Accident Reconstruction Consultants in 1978, providing expert consulting for several law firms and insurance companies. After his retirement from the force, he returned to work at the Westminster PD providing fleet maintenance and technical services, along with teaching the 911 driving school. Because he could never put enough into 24 hours, he also worked at DIA plowing snow and de-icing planes.
Al will be remembered for his love of the holidays and for being “bigger than life”. He became very close to his adoring family and his brothers and sisters after his open-heart surgery. That incident reminded him that life needed to be lived, and his family and friends needed to be a larger part of his life.
He was an avid racecar lover, enjoyed dirt track racing, open wheel racing and was a part of RMLSA racing club. He introduced his young children to racing as active members of the RMQMA. Al’s hobbies included 3-D drawings and building things. Because he was a perfectionist in everything he did, and whatever he took on, he did it right. One of his favorite things was taking motorcycle trips with Jill and their friends.
Surviving are his wife Susan Jill Wilson of Brighton, CO; his son Scott Wilson of Westminster; his daughter Kristi Warner (Jason) of Johnstown; his brothers David Wilson (Sherri) of Westminster, Mike Wilson (Shelley) of Arvada and his sisters Janna Rohrig (Stan) and Gail Michels of Arvada. He is further survived by his grandchildren Brenner, Joseph, Bryan, Chloe and Ryker who is due in June, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard Wilson and his sister Mary Frances Wilson.
Cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services in Longmont, CO.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 23 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Hoffbrau, 9110 Wadsworth Parkway, Westminster, CO 80021.

On behalf of Jill, Scott, Kristi and the entire Wilson family, we’d like to thank you for all the beautiful calls, letters and messages of support we have received these past few days. While we are devastated by our loss, your love and kindness has truly helped us through this difficult time and for that we will be forever grateful.
As Al wished, there will not be a funeral or memorial service. All of you know he was not the kind of man who sought attention or wanted to put people out. However, we do plan to hold a Celebration of Life in the coming weeks for all his many friends and family to gather to remember all those legendary Alan Wilson stories, share some laughs and a few beers – just like he would have wanted. It will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, at the Hoffbrau in Westminster, 9100 Wadsworth Parkway. We look forward to thanking you in person.
In the meantime, we would love for you to share your favorite Al stories and/or photos that we will compile for his children and grandchildren in memoriam.
Please send your submissions to [email protected].
If you’d like to make a contribution in Al’s memory, you may make your check out to the Westminster Citizens Academy Alumni Association – a group formed to enhance relations and public awareness between the community and the Westminster Police Department, where he proudly served for nearly four decades. Contributions can be sent in care of Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St. Longmont, CO 80501.
Again, please know how much we appreciate the thoughtfulness and kindness so many of you have extended to us. It’s overwhelming to think of how many lives Al touched over the years, but your memories provide us with untold strength as we cope with his loss.
We love you all,
The Wilson Family
