

Retired Air Force Maj. Alberto Alvarez passed away Monday, July 22, 2013, at the age of 72. Alberto was born Aug. 9, 1940, in Gilcrest, Colo., to the late Lorenzo and Juanita Alvarez. Alberto served 21 years in the Air Force, some of that time as a radar navigator on a B-52 bomber and he was deployed during the Vietnam War numerous times, during which he flew over 300 successful missions. He married the love of his life, Diamantina, on Dec. 14, 1968, in Platteville, Colo.
Alberto was a devoted Catholic who attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Texas. He also retired after 22 years as a technical publications editor for Lockheed Martin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rebecca Baeza.
Survivors: Wife, Diamantina Alvarez; daughter, Julie Alvarez; grandson, Noah Alvarez; brothers, Lawrence Alvarez and wife, Toyoko, Tomas Alvarez and wife, Virginia, Manuel Alvarez and Felix Alvarez and wife, Margie; sisters, Severance Alvarez, Isabel Bara, Rosie Barrera, Juanita Garcia and husband, Santos, and Esther Veronica French and husband, Richard.
Vigil services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Longmont. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 7 also at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Longmont. Burial will be at 2:15 p.m. at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Staging area ""C"".
