Art didn't want any sort of service, and it's customary to tell anecdotes at those, so I thought it might be nice to share one here. Believe me, I could go on forever with them during the 50+ years we knew each other, but this one immediately comes to mind. In the good 'ol days of the 70's, Asbury Park and Seaside were both less than an hour away from where we grew up, just a short hop down the Garden State Parkway. We spent uncountable days down the shore together. It was strictly a boardwalk thing though, neither of us liked the beach (although it made for great bikini sightseeing, while sipping a cold one on a boardwalk bench with our feet up on the rail).  The night clubs in Asbury were also fantastic, especially the historic Stone Pony, which still stands today. Acts like The East Street Band (including Springsteen), Lynyrd Skynyrd, Peter Frampton, Cheap Trick, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the Ramones have all played there, just to touch on a very few. So, after setting up that scene, on to the subject: Pinball. It was king back then, and Asbury had literally hundreds of machines. Not to brag, but we honed our pinball skills to a point where I felt we could defeat anyone in the world. One time before we could drive (legally, anyway), we were camping with his parents somewhere down the shore. In the rec hall, there was an elector-mechanical era machine called Big Ben. That sort of machine had a mechanical replay counter, which rotated up to a max of 99 games. Between the two of us, we maxed that counter out in just a few hours. When it was time to hit the head, slip into the woods for a beer, or just plain get some sleep, we'd let other people who were there with us play to try and keep the roll going. Of course, the counter would be down a bit when we returned, but we always managed to get it back up pinned to 99 replays. The amazing part of this was, we kept this going for 3 STRAIGHT DAYS, on a single quarter. It would have been longer than that, but the time finally came when we had to go home! Then, there was Bachmann's Tavern in Rahway, our main hangout. They had a single pinball machine, which the operator would swap out with a newer model about once a month. When that happened, we'd play it for a few hours in the afternoon, until we had it down to a science. We'd then return that evening, offering to play other two-man teams for pitchers of beer. All the while we continued this pinball shark routine, I think we may have had to pay for a half a dozen pitchers or so, out of literally hundreds of matches. What can I say, sometimes our opponents got lucky. Hands down, I had more fun during that time than any other in my life.My beloved lost Brother, I think of you every single day, and try to keep a dry eye because I know you would have wanted it that way.

Aunt Pudge, Pat, Perry and Char, you are all in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May happy memories of Cousin Artie carry you through the hard times. I love you all very much. 

We are so saddened to hear about Artie's passing. We will always cherish the fun times we had on Kline Blvd., the Baumles home, Bachman's and poker games we had at our home to name a few. He was a good man. God Bless him. May he rest in peace.

RC was a legend to me in my teens. We were pals and at times he was my protector. He could be larger than life and was one of those people who knew a little about many things. His projection of worldliness at the tender age of fifteen drew me to him. I was two years younger and clearly had a lot to learn. RC was all too happy to school me. I can't tell you how many times I rode shotgun in the once red/than primer grey '68 Camarro he cherished. I helped him drop a new, and more powerful engine in it with nothing more than ropes, a hydraulic jack, and a few beer filled friends. Those were the days - matted black angel hair on the dash and Black Sabbath's Master of Reality blaring from the eight-track through blown speakers. God, I'll miss him. The memories his company provided were truly some of the best from my troubled youth.

Very few people know this, but Art Horning has been waging a brave fight against cancer for over a year now. He passed away peacefully last night, with the people who loved him most dearly at his side.That battle was just what anyone who knew Art would expect, as he was one of the strongest and most courageous people I've ever known. There were no complaints from him about his illness, he just rolled with it, like everything else in his life.As for me, just how does one even begin to fill the huge gap left in your soul that comes from losing someone you've known so well, and for so very long? We were complete Brothers, in every sense of the word. We would have given each other the shirt off our backs, and he did exactly that for me, on more occasions than I could possibly count.Art and I first met in Kindergarten, and were even in the Cub Scouts together. His Mom was our Den Mother.He made my introductions to the girl who would eventually become my Bride, then was Best Man at my wedding. I remember him offering me the keys to his Camaro outside the church just before the ceremony saying, She's all filled up, this is your last chance man!Was he serious? I couldn't even tell you, because all I could do was laugh. That's just the way he was. There was never a dull moment when it came to this man, and his off-the-wall sense of humor.He was also Godfather to my oldest son, and all my children affectionately called him Uncle Art.It's such a tremendous loss, to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. One thing's for certain, he'll be in my heart and thoughts until my dying day.Rest easy now, Bro. I know you're riding your beloved Panhead down the highway of the afterlife, in God's good graces.
