

Burnham Newton “Newt” Gossett of Longmont was born in 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Burnham and Esther Gossett. Newt met his wife, Sue Prater Gossett, through her cousin, Herb Gardner, who was his best friend. They married in 1952 in Kansas. They lived in Denver and Boulder, CO., and briefly in California, before moving back to Boulder in 1959, where they lived until 1995.
Newt started as a journalism student at Kansas State University, he served in the Navy and Navy Reserve, before settling down in Colorado with Sue and studying engineering. He worked for Ball Brothers Research Corporation for 20 years. His aerospace work travel took him to Huntsville Alabama, Houston Texas, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, and Washington, DC. Newt and Sue raised their four children in the foothills of Boulder, while enjoying hiking, camping, whitewater canoeing, Nordic skiing, and ice skating as a family. Newt was an Eagle Scout and served as a Scoutmaster for two boy scout troops in Boulder. Newt was also a mason in the Boulder Masonic Lodge # 45.
After their children were raised, Sue and Newt continued to travel in the US, Europe, and Canada. Newt was an avid sailor as a boy and sailed later in Colorado and in the Caribbean.
He retired early from Ball, worked for Hank Roberts and started Aqua-Motion with son Joel, where they built therapy pools. He also managed Saint Vrain Manor, an eighty-unit senior apartment building in Longmont, in later years.
Newt lost the love of his life, Sue, just before their 71st Anniversary this year.
Newt is survived by three sons, David and Diane Gossett, Broomfield CO., Daniel and Stephanie Gossett, Eaton, CO., Joel and Ann Gossett, Tonasket WA., daughter Kathryn and Phillip Miner, Harrisville NH.; 12 grandchildren, Zoe Gossett, Alaina Gossett, Phillip Fettig, Donald Fettig, Julie Mercer, Edward and Lanea Gossett, Joseph and Vanessa Gossett, Sarah and Jason Winder, Jonathan and Jillian Miner, Anna and Andrew Ritchie, Emily and Nathan Martin, Amy Miner; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Newt’s sister Barbara Cotts Gossett, grandson Mark Fettig, and grandson Matthew Gossett predeceased him.
A memorial service will be held later. Inurnment for both Newt and Sue will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver later.
