Barb Adams died peacefully at home in Longmont on June 13th with her two children by her side. She was born in 1939 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Don and Marion Voss. After graduating from T. C. Howe High School in Indianapolis in 1957, Barb attended Butler University on an academic scholarship. She graduated with honors in 1961 and achieved a double major in English and Mathematics. She was an active member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and continued that sisterhood when they moved to Colorado with the CU chapter.
She married Don Adams, who was the short order cook at her sorority, on June 11, 1959, and they moved to Kokomo, Indiana, where they lived for eight years. Don and Barb had two children, Angie and Scott. In 1968 they moved their family to Longmont, wanting to be closer to the mountains and skiing opportunities that were not available in the Midwest. A few years after, they bought a small farm in Berthoud and raised cows and pigs, as well as having two horses to ride. Life on the farm was short lived, and they then built one of the first houses in Fox Hill and were the third members of the club. When Scott graduated from UT with a degree in architecture, he designed a beautiful mountain home for them near Pinewood Springs. This home was their pride and joy. With the serenity of the mountains and all the wildlife, they were very much at home. When taking care of their mountain property became overwhelming, Barb and Don moved back to Longmont Estates, which is where they began in 1968.
Except for some substitute teaching in Indiana, she was a stay-at-home mom, spending her time skiing and swimming with her family. When her children were in college, she joined the workplace and did computerized accounting for several small businesses in the area.
Barb was one of founders of the Boulder County PFLAG chapter. She was very passionate about this and was asked to speak at area high schools and front range colleges. She was also a member of the PEO chapter CJ, and the First Congregational Church.
Barb’s greatest joy came from being with family. Whether it was on a pool deck, a ski slope, or water skiing on a lake, if she was with family she was most happy. When her grandchildren were born (Kendall and Lindsay Banning), she and Don rarely missed a sporting event. They drove all over the state and flew around the country to support their many athletic endeavors.
Barb and Don loved traveling outside the country, as well as throughout the United States. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family trip to Akumal, Mexico. They were lucky enough to be able to travel extensively.
Barb is survived by her children, Angie (Bob) Banning and Scott Adams (Alberto); two beloved grandchildren, Kendall (Jade) Banning of Lindsborg, Kansas, and Lindsay (Adam) Alguire or Colorado Springs; six great grandchildren, Rhett Banning, Zan Banning, Leighton Alguire, Bex Banning, Jordan Alguire, and Vail Banning.
