Known most for his love for his family, Brandon lived a life filled with tremendous passion and service towards others, strong will to live and live well, and his unwavering determination to make himself better and in turn the world around him.
Brandon was honored to grow up and become a multigenerational farmer in Colorado before he eventually joined some of his best friends as a truck driver in the oil field at ATP Oilfield Services. He eventually took a position that he loved at Transwest Truck Trailer RV in Brighton, CO to be able to spend more time with his family.
Brandon met his wife, Naomi Johnston, in Cheyenne WY in 2003 but was too stubborn to do anything about it until 2009. From the start of their friendship and relationship, they shared an intense love for making each other laugh, holding each other up, and doing life side by side. Naomi was the love of his life and often he told her, his reason to keep up the fight. He was an extraordinary husband and dad, showing all three of his girls a level of love and selflessness that is both rare and unmatched.
He had a deep and unending love and pride for his daughters, Kyanne and Leyna. He took an active role in their lives, rarely missing any opportunity to show up for them and living with such intention that they knew they were chosen and loved and that he was most proud of them.
Family was his priority and Brandon will be missed greatly by all of them. To name a few, in his grandma’s kitchen where he barely fit but loved to be at her table, when his father-in-law and brother-in-law watch football, when his sister-in-law wants to "talk shop" and give him a hard time, when we host "small" summer bbqs with his family, his best friends and the piles and piles of teenagers that grew to love him as another dad in their life.
Brandon developed a passion for cooking and making meals for the people he loved was something people will remember and miss. He hosted holidays, he loved having people over to crowd his house and backyard, but somehow even more than these, he treasured time around his table with his family on Sunday nights. You can be sure he's taking this unbelievable talent to heaven for the ones that went before him.
Brandon did everything with honesty and integrity. He had very strong values and with his larger-than-life personality, was well liked by everyone in every room he walked into. Some of the rooms he impacted most were the places he enjoyed serving others, seeking leadership opportunity and keeping company with some of the best men and women in Colorado: Flatirons Church in Lafayette, CO, his men's bible study group in Brighton, CO, the "old man breakfast" at Gabe's cafe in Frederick, CO, the Colorado Young Farmers organization -- specifically the Front Range chapter, the Sirloin Club (his wife calls it a secret society and wants it permanently remembered as such for his sake) and more.
He fought hard not only to stay alive despite the cards stacked against him, but really, to live. Every day he looked for the opportunity to make himself better for himself and everyone around him and we ask that all honor him by doing the same.
Brandon was a magnet for extraordinary people and the demonstration of that is already seen and felt in the way he's getting to see his family taken care of by them. Our deep felt gratitude will never be expressed deep and wide enough to thank those that have stepped in to help us shoulder this unbelievable loss.
We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at UCH Aurora, and specifically Dr. Harrington & nurses Jill, Riley, Lindsey & Sarah for their unwavering strength and stamina in doing everything they could for him and us.
Brandon is survived and missed by his loving wife Naomi Johnston; and his children, Kyanne and Leyna Johnston.
Forever cherished and remembered by his grandma, Margaret Knox; his parents, Darrell & Cindy Johnston, and Keith and Kelly Groeneweg. Siblings and their families; Cody Johnston, Ben Groeneweg, and Mark & Danielle Schlegel (Cole), His memory will be cherished and celebrated by his aunt and uncle, Ronald (Rocket) & Sandy Shayler, cousins Tony & Amy Shayler, Mike & Christie Shayler and their families, and the Johnston, Groeneweg & Rutt families that he didn't get to see nearly often enough but treasured so much.
His memory will live on and be honored by so many - but we want to specifically mention the men in his life that were like brothers that will do it best: Mark Schlegel, Luke Meier, Cody Stevens, Alex Platt & Josh Scott.
Brandon was predeceased by his grandparents, Henry and Ruth Johnston, his best four-legged friend Rolz, and many incredible extended family members.
