

Charles Edwin ""Charlie"" Atkins, of Hygiene, Colorado, died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at Presbyterian/St. Luke?s Medical Center in Denver. He was 75 years old.Charles was born March 28, 1931 in Sterling, Colorado to Frank and Dorthy (Horn) Atkins. He was raised on a small farm in northeastern Colorado and was the second of three children. After graduating from high school, Mr. Atkins served in the US Navy from 1950 to 1954. He was assigned to the USS Catimount LSD 17 during the Korean War and attained the rank of Boatswain?s Mate Second Class.On November 13, 1955, he married Rosalie Ruth Ford in Raton, New Mexico. The couple made their home and raised their four children in Cheyenne, Wyoming until moving to a ranch near Hygiene in 1973.Mr. Atkins worked for over 40 years with Western Paving Construction Company as well as running his family ranch. He retired in 1992 and has enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and his dog, Hannah. He also served as a deacon with Foothills Baptist Church.Charles is survived by his wife, Rosalie Atkins; two daughters, Frankie Atkins and Shauna Atkins; a son, Shannon Atkins and his wife, Paula; and four grandchildren, Kasey Mae, Emilee, Loyd and Becca. He is further survived by a sister, Peggy Schott.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kent ""Casey"" Atkins; and a brother, Don Atkins.Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26 at Howe Mortuary, Longmont, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 27 at Foothills Baptist Church, 12650 North Foothills Highway (near Lyons) with interment at Foothills Gardens of Memory, Longmont.
