Cody Hovendick of Longmont slipped from this world on August 30, 2011 at Hospice Care of Boulder and Broomfield Counties due to complications from brain cancer. A big man, with an even bigger heart, he was a beloved husband, father, papa, son, brother and friend.
Charles Cody Hovendick was born in Roswell, New Mexico, on April 10, 1952. The son of Charles “Bud” Hovendick and Wanda Wahlstrom Hovendick, he moved to Longmont when he was four. As a child, Cody spent his summers on family farms in Nebraska and the memories of those carefree, joyful times stayed with him throughout his life. He attended Longmont schools graduating from Longmont High School in 1970. While at LHS, Cody participated in track and field and played football for the Trojans. He graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Environmental Design in 1975 and attended graduate school at the University of Washington in Seattle. Cody remained a proud supporter of all things Black and Gold throughout his life.
He married Rhonda Booth on September 6, 1980 at Peaceful Valley, Colorado in the very chapel where he and his father laid the building’s foundation.
Cody worked in construction management and retired from the Saint Vrain Valley School District in 2009. As a project manger for the school district, Cody oversaw the construction of fifteen schools and numerous building projects. He was a hard working professional who took great pride in the quality of his work and his service to the community.
A gifted athlete, Cody skied, biked, hiked, and golfed with enthusiasm. His happiest times were plowing through fresh powder on the ski slopes or hitting a long drive off the T-box. He also loved traveling, Stephen King novels, cold beer and bombarding his friends with corny jokes and e-mails.
Cody is survived by his wife and best buddy, Rhonda, and his adored children- daughter, Briana Francis (Jeff) of Evergreen and son, Cole Hovendick (Karly) of Longmont, and his grandchildren, Kiara and Cade Hovendick. Other survivors include his father, Bud, and his brother, Mike, and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition, he is also survived by his three terriers: Sophie, Sadie, and Gretel. His mother, Wanda, preceded him in death.
Howe Mortuary has been entrusted with cremation. The interment of his ashes will be at the Ryssby Church Cemetery in rural Boulder County. A celebration of a life well lived will be held at the church he attended for 55 years, First Lutheran in Longmont, at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 3, 2011 with Pastor Steve Berke officiating. A reception at the church will follow the service.
Memorial Contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church, the Longmont Humane Society, or Hospice Care of Boulder and Broomfield Counties.
The Hovendick family would like to thank all of the wonderful individuals who shared Cody’s journey these past months – the Kaiser Permanente oncology and neurosurgery departments, including Dr. David Blatt and Dr. Thomas Hyde, the ministerial staff of First Lutheran Church, and the entire flock of angel care givers at Hospice Care.
