

Charles John Simonsen, 81, of Longmont, passed away April 24, 2017 at home after a long illness. Charles was born on June 18, 1935, to Charles Altig Sr. and Lillian Bacher in Portland, Oregon. He later moved to Colorado with his mother and adoptive father, Charles Simonsen. He attended the Colorado Military School and in 1953 he graduated from South High School in Denver. On January 3, 1954, he married the love of his life, Mary Newberry in Denver and moved to Longmont to work. They were married 58-1/2 years before she passed away in 2012. He worked for Dualmatic for 24-1/2 years, Vernon Company for a few years, and most recently has been with Denver Wholesale Florists for 30 years.Charles was very active in the community being involved with the Jaycees, president of the Longmont Chamber in the 1970's, president of the Longmont Men's Golf Association for 22 years, once a member of the Boulder County Fair board, a life member of the Longmont Elks Lodge 1055 for 59 years, a member of St. Vrain Masonic Lodge #23 for 33 years and many other community groups that we cannot remember.Charles loved to travel not only for fun but work as well, and has been to more countries than we can remember.Charles was preceded in death by his bride, Mary Simonsen, parents Lillian Simonsen, Charles Altig Sr., adopted dad Charles Simonsen and step-mom Hazel Altig.Charles is survived by his three children, sons Charles Jay Simonsen of Broomfield and Mark Simonsen of Longmont, daughter Kelley Simonsen of Longmont; one brother, Curtis Simonsen of Laramie, WY; one sister Luanna Waldron of Pelham, MA; his grandchildren Marsha Clarke of Longmont, Melynda (Erik) B hm of Firestone, Mindy Sandoval of Westminster, Marissa (Josh) Clarke of Silverdale, WA, Levi Stone currently a student at Ozark Christian College in Joplin, MO; his eight great-grandchildren, William, Matthew and Haley Clarke of Longmont, Camden B hm of Firestone, Lennon Sandoval and Charlotte Harford of Westminster, and Dawson and Lucas Clarke of Silverdale, WA; niece Jane Dunlavy of Broomfield; great-nieces Amanda Dunlavy of Dodge City, KS and Lyndsey Dunlavy of Broomfield; former daughter-in-law Melodie (Ron) Friedman of Ft. Myers, FL; and several cousins all over the US.Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM, Monday, May 1, 2017 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
