Charley was a devoted husband, doting father, beloved son, brother, and loyal friend to many. He was known for his kindness, humor, servant heart, and remarkable ability to connect people and build community. He deeply loved his family and left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Known for his humor and playful spirit, Charley loved making people laugh and was always ready with a dad joke or a pun. He had a gift for bringing levity to any situation and making people feel at ease. His joy was contagious, and his laughter will be deeply missed.
Charley spent his early years in Spring Lake, Michigan, where he was active in athletics and formed many lifelong friendships. He later attended Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Marketing. His career reflected the same qualities that defined him personally: hard work, authenticity, and a genuine care for people.
Charley enjoyed many impressive athletic endeavors over the years, whether on foot or on a bike, often alongside close friends. He approached life with determination, enthusiasm, and a spirit of adventure.
Most importantly, Charley was a follower of Jesus. He was an active member of 2|42 Community Church in Ann Arbor, where he served on the production team and led small groups alongside his wife. After moving to Colorado, he became an integral part of City Church Boulder, serving on the production team and leading the Prayer Team.
Charley sought to know, love, and follow Jesus. He found hope, forgiveness and life in Him. We grieve his absence, but we do not grieve without hope, trusting in the promise that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, those who belong to Him will one day be raised to everlasting life.
Charley is survived by his wife, Emily, and their three daughters, Margret "Margo" (5), Juliette "Etta" (4), and Ruby Lou (7 months); his parents, Ross and Sheryl Vlietstra; his sister, Kacy Martin (Evan), and their children, Joaquin (6) and Sylvia (4 months); his maternal grandparents, Jack and Jackie Burley; his mother-in-law, Cyndi Shaeffer, and his father-in-law, Jim Shaeffer; his brother-in-law, Eric Shaeffer (Jessica), and their son, Logan (6); and many treasured aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Adrian and June Vlietstra.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at City Church Boulder, 2801 Jay Road, Boulder, Colorado with a visitation taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. From City Church Boulder’s homepage, the service will be live-streamed beginning at 11:00 a.m. MT.
