

Charlotte Jean Houston1930 ? 2007Charlotte Jean (Berg) Houston, 76, died at her home in Longmont, Colorado on Friday, March 30, 2007.Charlotte was born in Boulder, Colorado on December 24, 1930 to Frank Albert (Sr.) and Ruby Fae (Baxter) Berg. She grew up in Boulder, lived in Seattle, Washington for a time, graduated from Boulder High in 1948, and was an honor graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1952, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.Charlotte was married to Charles Houston in Boulder on July 20, 1952. They honeymooned in Yellowstone and Glacier Parks and returned to Brighton, Colorado where she taught elementary education for two years. She also taught elementary school in Fort Morgan and at Pueblo County High School. In 1960 ? 61, Charlotte taught elementary physical education in Westminster while her husband finished his Master?s degree at CU.The Houstons enjoyed camping and back packing, visited the Canadian Rockies, hiked into the Grand Canyon, drove the Alaskan Highway in 1956, visited historic sights in Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Connecticut, Washington, D. C., North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee, traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, England, Germany and Switzerland over the years.In 1961, they moved to their Longmont home with infant daughter Julie Ann where they also raised three sons: Steven Charles, Wayne Albert and John Daniel. Charlotte also found time to serve on Head Start, Longmont Urban Renewal, St. Vrain Manor and the RTD Board of Directors. She was Den Mother for Cub Scouts and helped with Girl Scout cookie sales. The family continued camping in national parks in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and Texas. Last August, revisiting favorite spots in the Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon and Zion National Park, Charlotte, oldest son Steve, Julie, granddaughter Codi, and Charles took a camping trip.Charlotte was a charter member of the Longmont League of Women Voters and a member of Sorotomists International. She received their Women of Distinction award in 1989.Charlotte, too, was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Longmont, served on several commissions, went on mission trips for the Boulder United Methodist Mission Partners to Alaska, Mexico, Russia, Honduras, and Bolivia and several locations in the United States. She was also involved in the Boulder/Jalapa Friendship City Project.In July, 1977, Charlotte was appointed to the office of Boulder County Clerk and Recorder to replace the resigning Clela Rorex. She was re-elected and served until the end of 2002. Charlotte was active in the Colorado County Clerks and Recorders, International Institute of Municipal Clerks and International Association of Clerks, Recorders and Treasurers organizations. She attended conferences in Alaska, Nova Scotia and the Netherlands as well as several place in the United States.Charlotte is survived by her husband, Charles of Longmont; Julie and Codi of Boulder; Steve, Theresa and Madison of Broomfield; Wayne, Jessica, Whaylon and Tawnna of Englewood; John, Lori, Tanner, and Brook of Longmont; a cousin, Ellen-Marie (Sackrison) Richmire of Seattle, Washington; sister-in-law, Rebecca Berg of Boulder and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Frank Berg, Jr.Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the First United Methodist Church, 350 11th Avenue, in Longmont.
