Dale Espy was born in Denver, CO, on July 11, 1940, to S. Read Hicks and Bernice Lucile Espy. He graduated from South High in 1958. He then attended Colorado College for his bachelor’s degree, and received a Master’s from Denver Seminary in 1985. He served in the US Army from 1964-1972, reaching the rank of Captain. Alongside his service he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Bronze Star Medal. Dale was proud to serve his country.
Dale had several jobs over the course of his life outside of his military service. Over his career he delivered flowers in high school, owned a hardware store in Salida, worked at a few banks, a church, and a hotel. Of course, his hobby of choice was his preferred way to spend his time. With his extra time he enjoyed taking pictures of God’s Wonders. When Dale wasn't spending time in God's beauty he could be found with the Moffat Road Railroad Museum community and The Corona Telegraph. He shared his love of the Big Boy steam engines and his photography with friends and family during visits. Most important to him was his relationship with God and spending time at church. There he learned more of God's word and singing His praises in the choir. He attended White Fields Community Church as a member in the last years of life.
Dale is survived by his sister Laney Hicks, his three daughters - Heather Lee, Elisa Hicks, and Hollie Henderson - and his granddaughter Sheridan Lee. He is preceded by his parents - S. Read Hicks and Bernice Lucile Espy.
Dale's Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 12:30 PM at White Fields Community Church located at 2950 Colorful Ave, Longmont, CO 80504. A reception will follow the service. To join the livestream: https://www.youtube.com/live/L9sF9juyUg4
During the reception, a silent auction of Dale's photography will be held, with all proceeds benefiting organizations in his memory. Photography was one of Dale's greatest passions, and his work reflected the beauty he found in the world around him. We hope this gives his family and friends the opportunity to take home a piece of his art and remember him in a meaningful way.
Cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary of Longmont.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.howemortuary.com with his loving family.
