
Daniel Fox Bernard was born in Kenton, Ohio, on October 4, 1942, to Leo and Betty (Fox) Bernard. He passed away at Longmont United Hospital on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, after a six-year battle with multiple myeloma, with his wife of 43 years at his side.Bernard grew up in Ohio where he was active in academic, athletic, and community activities, and an avid ham radio operator and model airplane flyer. He graduated from Kenton High School, where he played both football and basketball and was active in student government. He graduated with a degree in political science from Iowa State University, where he played varsity football and served as president of his Phi Delta Theta Chapter. He then attended law school at Duke University, where he met his wife, Dale, a Duke undergraduate studying history. They married in Decatur, Georgia in 1968. Shortly thereafter, the Bernards moved to Southeast Asia, where Dan served two years in the Navy JAG Corps on the legal staff of the Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in the Philippines.At the end of his naval service, the Bernards moved to Colorado. Dan had been inspired to move to Colorado ever since his Iowa State football team traveled to Boulder to play CU on a picture-perfect autumn day in 1962. Dan first worked for a law firm in Denver. In 1972, the Bernards moved to Longmont when he joined the law firm of Grant & McCarren, which later became Bernard Lyons Gaddis & Kahn, P.C. Over the next 36 years, he developed a state-wide practice focused on the representation of school districts, including the St. Vrain Valley School District. Recently retired, he remained Senior Counsel to the firm.Bernard volunteered in a variety of ways, serving as President of the Boulder County Bar Foundation, President of the Boulder County United Way, President of Fox Hill Country Club, Board Member of the Duke Law School Alumni Association, Chair of the City's Long Range Planning Commission, Treasurer of the Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce, and a Paul Harris Fellow in the Longmont Rotary Club. Dan worked on community-wide fundraising campaigns, serving as a Superconductor candidate for the Longmont Symphony Orchestra and co-chair of the OUR Center Benefit Golf Tournament. For the past decade he served as a Director of the Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley, which seeks to support teachers and programs in local schools.Bernard's interests and passions included golf, international travel, and the study of World War II. He was organizer extraordinaire of whatever trip, reunion or gathering was on the horizon. He thoroughly enjoyed his book club, his Friday morning breakfast group, Duke basketball, the Denver Broncos, and, most especially, his five grandchildren.Bernard is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Betty (Fox) Bernard, and his younger brother, Michael Bernard. He is survived by his wife, Dale; his daughter, Kate Buchanan, and her husband, Phil; his son, Ryan Bernard, and his wife, Leah; five grandchildren: Blake, Holden, and Graham Buchanan; and Ada and Lucy Bernard; and three younger sisters: Kathy Franzel, Marie Sprang, and Anne Keller. The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, August 6, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1301 S. Bross Lane, Longmont.
