Darrell Eugene Black, 78, of Erie, Colorado, passed away at home surrounded by family on July 12, 2018. Darrell was born on February 3, 1940 in St. Francis, Kansas to Ralph Con and May Ellis (Duncan) Black. He graduated from Jennings High School in Jennings, Kansas in 1959. Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, 11 siblings, and his nephew, Danny Black, who held a special place in his heart. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Jean Black, his six children, Tina Dewey, Sandra Hill, Troy Black of Ft. Morgan, Lance Black (Brooke Richardson) of Denver, Gaynelle Tuck (Cleve) of Erie, and Devona Gooras (Phil) of Frederick, and his sister, Barbara Palmblad of Aurora, OR. He had 14 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
After high school, Darrell worked at a Dodge dealership with his brother in Oberlin. After working at the dealership, he rough-necked for a local oil company and transferred a rig to Alaska. Darrell came to Colorado and worked as a heavy equipment operator for Cox/Mountain Bell for many years. He then moved to Dacono where he built and opened Black’s Garage in Frederick, where he repaired radiators and serviced vehicles. He also worked at Frederick High School as head custodian. After leaving St. Vrain Valley School District he went to work for the City of Dacono as the Public Works Supervisor. Darrell retired from the City of Dacono in 2005.
Darrell and his wife Gloria (of 38 years) loved to travel. They traveled in their fifth wheel to Carlsbad, NM, Idaho Falls, ID, and Benton City, Washington, (where they ran an RV park). They traveled to Florida and attended the Broncos super bowl XXXIII, the Rose Bowl Parade in California, Canada to fish, Florida, Yellowstone National Park, South Dakota, and Mexico.
Darrell liked to camp, fish, four-wheel, fix cars (or anything with an engine), spend time with his family, and construct garages and sheds. He always had projects and could never sit still. He was known for his sense of humor and gift of helping people. He always had the greenest grass and loved to decorate outside for Christmas and had a friendly lighting contest with Mo Bertron.
Darrell will always be remembered by his laugh, funny sayings, sense of humor and love for his wife and family. He is greatly missed.
Funeral Services will be hold at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Howe Mortuary with Pastor Jose Medina officiating. Burial to follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont.
