David Phillip Kirby, 65, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 28th, 2025. David was a beloved son, husband, father, and friend whose life was defined by his devotion and love for God and his family.
David was born in Tampa, Florida, to Winfred and Patricia Kirby on May 19th, 1960. He lived the first few years of his life in the Tampa area of Florida and moved to Colorado when he was seven. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and earned a BA in biology. However, he loved the simplicity and order of accounting and landed there as his career. In Colorado, he met Sonia Montenero, the love and spice of his life, and married her on June 27th, 1987. Best friends and partners, they had a life of adventure, love, laughter, and ministry.
David’s heartbeat was for his Lord Jesus and his family. His loving and gentle legacy lives on through his devoted wife, Sonia; his son, Joshua [wife Haley]; his daughter, Eleni [husband Roy]; and grandson, Liam Oliver, as well as extended family and friends who will forever hold him dear in their hearts and memories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Winfred and Patricia Kirby, and his two older brothers, Rick Kirby and Jim Kirby.
Having a love for numbers, efficiency, and service, David found his home in 1995 working as an accountant for the Y. He loved the community and was a model employee and valued member there for 30 years.
David was a gifted musician and singer, having a beautiful tenor voice, perfect pitch, and a deep understanding of harmonies and rhythms. He attended Fairview High School in Boulder and was accepted into Excalibur, the esteemed jazz choral and performance group. In 1981, he began attending Bethel Temple in Longmont (now New Creation Church), where he joined the choir and a men’s trio that eventually combined with the ladies’ trio, creating a six-person group. That group became a worship team that led the congregation most Sundays for over 15 years. His wife, Sonia, had the joy of worshiping and performing alongside him as part of that six-person group.
David’s quiet compassion and honor for everyone was the code he lived his life by. A man of deep faith and reliance on the Holy Spirit, he often received words of prayer for others, whether at the churches he attended or in the community. David’s obedience and boldness were an enviable example. He always served in any capacity needed at church, whether singing on the worship team, running slides for the worship set, or serving as an elder alongside his wife at Lighthouse Church in Denver. He was an encourager and worshiper at his core.
For David, his family was his abiding joy. His vitality came from spending time with his children, their spouses, and his recent grandson born in November of 2024. He loved the simple pleasures of life like reading, long conversations around the dinner table with family and friends, movie nights with various snacks, card games, travel, and spending time with his sweetheart, taking quiet walks or hikes, just holding hands. His family was literally his pride and joy.
A celebration of David’s life will be held on July 9th, 2025, at 10 am at New Creation Church, 737 Bross Street in Longmont, where family and friends will gather to remember David, a life worth honoring, and a man whose presence on this earth will be immeasurably missed.
