Dennis Locke Bruns, 76, of Longmont, Colorado passed away on September 15, 2025. He was known for his toughness, resilience and lifelong sense of humor. He lived a happy life full of simple pleasures like Nascar, fishing, golf, music and enjoying the company of family and friends.
Born in Iowa, raised in Colorado, Dennis and his two brothers, Craig and Brian, tormented each other as only brothers can, likely contributing to his grit later in life. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran, serving in the Navy as a radioman. He built a strong career on the foundation of communications he learned in the Navy as a 911 dispatcher and eventually as a nationally acclaimed trainer of dispatchers.
Dennis was the beloved husband of 44 years to his wife Shirley. He was a supportive and fun-loving father to his sons, Cameron and Tyler. He was also the reluctant dog-dad of Peanut, with whom he finally found common ground and loyal companionship.
A Purple Heart injury brought him home from Vietnam, where he spent a year at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, showing just how tough he really was. The doctors, nurses and caregivers who crossed his path over the years generally endured a barrage of invective and lack of cooperation. We are so grateful for the kindness and dedication many of them delivered, despite this, to keep his body running as best they could, until it was no longer strong enough to contain his enormous spirit.
Dennis never met a situation he couldn’t improve with a well-timed joke. His lifetime of pranks ran the gamut from the simple, but classic, “pull my finger” to the elaborately planned and executed gluing of a Captain’s office furniture to the ceiling. His infectious laughter endeared him to many friends and loved ones over the years, and its absence will leave an indelible vacancy in their hearts and minds.
Humble until the end, Dennis did not want a formal memorial service but will receive military honors at Fort Logan National Cemetery on October 8, 2025 at 2:30 PM. Naval Military Honors will be rendered by All Veterans Honor Guard of Denver and a dignified final salute will be presented by The Honor Bell Foundation.
Rest in Peace.
Cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary of Longmont, Colorado.
