Don Libal went to be with God on October 28, at the age of 90. He was at home surrounded by his family. He was born January 13, 1927 to James and Veda Libal on the family farm north of Lucas Kansas.
Don graduated from Lucas High School in 1945. His mother accepted his diploma since he was inducted into the Army in April of 1945. After his discharge from the Army, he came back to Lucas to farm with his dad.
In October of 1951, a good friend asked him to help out by going on a blind date. He didn’t know how that would change the rest of his life. Don and Ellie eloped to Longmont and were married December 10, 1955. They lived briefly in in Kansas and then moved to Longmont in 1958.
Don was self-employed and had several businesses. His first full service station was a Shamrock Station on 9th and Main St. He also owned the Champlin Station on 17th and Main St. He grew that business with U-Haul rentals, car inspections and full service repair. In 1977 he closed the station and opened North Main Motors, where he sold cars, did emission testing and continued U-Haul rentals. In 1999 he retired. His retirement was a lot of hard work helping with his daughter and son-in-law’s businesses. He at least took time to travel, fish and spend time with family. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ellie, daughter Debbie (Dan) Johnson, sons Jim, Tim (Lori) and eight grandchildren. He is further survived by his brother Jerry Libal and sister Nathalie Bean. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack and grandson Duran.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday November 2 at the Heart of Longmont Methodist Church at 350 11th Ave.
Memorial donations in memory of Don can be made to the Shriner Hospital or to the Heart of Longmont Methodist Church.
