

Earl Winter of Loveland, Colorado, formerly of Longmont, died April 30, 2008, at Good Samaritan Village in Loveland. He was 96.Earl was born December 25, 1911, in Waverly, Kansas, to Charles Albert and Grace (Hoffman) Winter. Following his graduation from Emporia (KS) High School, Earl left his home to in search of a new life and experiences in California. On his way he made a stop in Longmont; it would become his home for the next 70 years.Earl married Maxine Coral Golden on August 23, 1933 in Longmont. That same year he went to work for Classic Cleaners and purchased the business the following year. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Navy, serving from 1942-44. He closed the cleaners during his deployment, but reopened it upon his return and ran it until his retirement in 1972.A longtime member of Central Presbyterian Church, Earl was active in the church choir. He was a charter member of the Longmont Barbershoppers. He was a member of the Oddfellows and the Longmont American Legion Post #32 (where he had been the oldest member at the time of his death).He helped write the original planning ordinance for the City of Longmont and later served on the planning commission. In addition, he served on the board of appeals for the county, acting as Chairman for a number of years, retiring in 1973. Earl enjoyed photography, golf, camping, road trips, and woodworking.Preceding him in death were his wife, a son, Ken, and a brother, Everett Winter.Surviving are his daughter, LaRae (Gerald) Cushing of North Hills, CA; daughter-in-law, Cathy Winter of Longmont; grandchildren, Michael (Sherri) Cushing of Costa Mesa, CA, Cheryl (Joe) Morgan of Mission Hills, CA, Todd (Diana) Winter and Kristi (Ken) Davidson, both of Longmont; and eight great-grandchildren; Sarah and Allison Morgan, Lauren and Eric Cushing, Blake and Keith Winter, and Courtney and Brittany Davidson.
