Frank was born on July 26, 1937 in Greeley, Colorado to Byron and Gertrude Calkins Campbell. He grew up in Greeley and graduated from Greeley High School.
After high school he worked various construction and truck driving jobs. He met Rosemary Coughlin Campbell in Pueblo, Colorado and they were married in 1961. They moved to the Coughlin family farm north of Boulder, where Frank built the house they lived in for the next 40 years. They had two children – Becky and Shawn. Frank and Rosemary divorced in 2004.
Frank began a career in the automotive industry after moving to Boulder. He began as a mechanic, moved to service manager and for 20 years taught auto mechanics at Boulder Vo-Tech. When he retired from teaching, he and his best friend, Don Stadtmiller, started a construction and remodeling business. Their work lives on in many houses in Boulder County and beyond.
Frank volunteered for 15 years at the Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center, doing everything from caring for horses and leading riders to building and maintaining buildings. He was named volunteer of the year in 2008. He met two people at CTRC that became very important in his life. The first was Justine Williams, who he considered his adopted daughter for the last 25 years of his life, and who was with him when he died. He also met Donna Crouse, who was his life partner until his health deteriorated to the point where he needed to move into an assisted living situation in October 2025.
In retirement, Frank also volunteered with the Longmont Police Department, worked as a crossing guard for the St. Vrain Valley School District, and spent many happy hours helping Justine with her Equine-Assisted therapy program – now a non-profit called Rhythm of the Horse. Another of his great joys was riding his electric trike – all over Firestone and later Longmont.
As Frank was fond of saying, he could build anything and fix anything. Over the years he built beautiful furniture, toys, cradles, dollhouses, bowls, pens, and too many useful things to count. All of us who have been blessed with something he made will be forever grateful to have his love in the form of his art.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, his son Shawn and his sisters RuthAnn Clark and Peggy Lind.
He is survived by his daughters Becky Campbell-Howe (Jim) and Justine Williams; his grandchildren Megan (Paul Johnson) and James Howe and Lyla and Isaac Williams. He is also survived by his sister Kay Eichheim and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Frank was a good man whose caring heart and beautiful art touched many lives. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A Celebration of Frank’s life will be held on May 11, at 11:00am at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont, with luncheon to follow.
Donations in his memory may be made to Rhythm of the Horse or A Way Forward.
